Kenny Jin – New York Times “Front Page” Project BLOG Post #2

  1. Describe the process of sharing your project.                                                                              Each of the members of my group were assigned specific articles which we would blog about. Randomly, we selected articles that we would share in class during presentations. Overall, we were all responsive and worked together well to successfully complete the project.
  2. What was the experience like?                                                                                                                         The experience was a good chance to socialize and work together with people in the block. It allowed me to work with them differently from just talking to them in day to day conversations and connected us to be better friends and peers.
  3. What did you learn about yourself?                                                                                                               I learned that, while I have had experience in public speaking, I have much to improve in order to speak better in public.
  4. Describe the process of watching your peers present their projects.                                      Most of my peers presenting their projects did a good job and have similar problems that my group and I had, although some were more prepared while others were not.
  5. What was the experience like?                                                                                                                          It was interesting to see a common problem that we all face when it comes to presenting orally in front of an audience.
  6. What did you learn from them?                                                                                                                        I learned that I should practice to be a better speaker and form better habits when it comes to presenting to a crowd.

Kenny Jin NYTimes Article #2: Twitter vs. Facebook: A Tale of Two Sites

New sources of social media have been sprouting over the years and have become a popular way for people to communicate. Since the rise of Twitter and Facebook, companies have been competing to be the best. Both incorporate communication in different ways. Twitter can be seen more as a information/news network while Facebook “functions as the yellow pages for the internet.”  While Twitter has an enormous community of 200 million monthly users, it stands no chance against Facebook’s 1 billion. Granted that Twitter came to be a few years after Facebook, it still has a chance to become a formidable competitor in the social media world. Both rely heavily on advertisements to expand their revenue and growth as a company. Facebook has incorporated Instagram, a photo-sharing app, which has generated a much larger fan-base. On the other hand, Twitter has recently purchased Vine, a short video-sharing app, which has also drawn in a plethora of new users.

Kenny Jin NYTIMES Article #1 The Numbers Behind Twitter

Social media is a staple to the culture of the upcoming generation. Twitter has rose since the past few years to become a giant attraction for users to post little “tweets” or messages, much like a Facebook status. Since 2010, Twitter has multiplied its revenue by more than 11 times, reaching $317 million dollars in 2012. Despite the growing popularity, the tech company is failing to make a profit, losing $79 million dollars during 2012. 85% of their revenue goes into advertising while the rest remains within their data license. Twitter has still yet to flourish, but the majority of users are actually from foreign countries, not America. The 23% of the Twitter community are Americans and offered $2.17 from advertisements displayed on the timeline. The rest of the revenue from other areas raise a mere $0.30  from advertisements showed to viewers. Twitter needs to discover a better way to expand internationally. Their major setback is the unfamiliarity with digital advertising outside America due to the different factors foreign users face, be it different government regulation or lack of internet access. All in all, Twitter thrives on the advertisements to continue running. If the large tech corporation cannot fashion a new way to expand themselves internationally, what kind of demise will they meet in the end?

I love cycling. It’s an opportunity to exercise and have fun and you can get both a rush of adrenaline or feelings of peace and relaxation. Some other hobbies I have are playing the drums and the guitar. I’m self taught so I’m not that amazing but I’m definitely a lot better at drums than the guitar, although I would love to be able to play all different types of instruments.

Another passion I have is for animals. I’ve always grown up loving cats and dogs and all other sorts of pets. A dog truly is a man’s best friend, but so is a cat or a bird or maybe even a fish.

I love money and anyone who says they don’t is a liar. I like the thought of making money and having money and being able to spend money.

I also really love food, you know, ’cause I need it to live? I eat a lot and I eat just about anything. I don’t really have a favorite, but I could really go for some Shake Shack right now. So that’s why I included a picture of that.

People who knew me when I was younger might know me as a little crazy. Or just stupid. It’s probably the latter, but I’ve always had crazy sorts of hairstyles growing up. I’d rather not show pictures, but I’ve went from hairstyles like blowout/afro to mohawks to some weird stuff that I don’t even know what to call it. I even dyed my hair blue once.

Like I said, I really love animals. In the future, I want to pick up breeding on the side. So if you want a cute little puppy, give me a call.
