I used to be the type of person who would be cautious and be afraid of change. During my first semester at Baruch, I decided to move away from my fears and throw away any regret I had. I told myself that college life was a whole different beast, a new world, and a path that I can control; no regrets.

The experience of my first three months at Baruch was different from high school. Many of the classes were enlightening and interesting. I felt it was a time for exploration, of both different subjects and me. Philosophy was, while sometimes confusing, enlightening. Anthropology taught me to look at the happenings in life in a whole new perspective. English led me to great works of literature and expression. Communications set me onto an unexplored platform of learning.

I believe that these brief three months do not define my experience in Baruch, but have given me a chance to get to know both the school and myself better. I hope that as the future unfolds, my life at Baruch would be just as positive as my first semester.

Christina Mar: Enrichment Workshop

The enrichment workshop was an enlightening experience. In a school with students from all over the five boroughs and a small campus, school spirit is not the first thing that stands out. College life for most people seems to be a process of coming in for class and leaving after class, all business. However, this workshop brought up the point of leadership and examples of leadership, on both campus and in the city.

I believe that college is a great place to test out our comfort zones and also get away from them. It is a place where we learn about different things, join new groups, and experiment with our comfort zones. In this case, leadership is a great way to spread out and go beyond. While we all attend a business school, it doesn’t mean we must adhere to the plain black suits and ties, but take a step up and be colorful, inspirational, and game changing leaders. Whether it’s in the stories we tell, innovative ideas, accidental discoveries, or challenging opinions, with the willpower and effort, we can all become leaders.

Christina Mar’s New York Times Project

1. What was the “theme” your group selected for your front page, and how did you select it? How did the articles you selected fit within that theme?

The theme my group selected for our front page is smartphones. We chose to use this topic because the impact of smartphones are relevant to the daily lives of many Baruch students, if not, our generation.

2. What was your individual role in the group process working on the NYT project?
My role in the group was to write two articles on smartphones, both on the global and national scale.

3. How has your experience within this project influenced your understanding of “news literacy”?Provide a link to your NYT Front Page Project.

My experience from working on this project did not greatly influence me on “news literacy.” Outside of this project, I am already aware and up to date with most of the significant discussions on the news.

Post 1 – 8 Things About Christina

1. Corgis

I love Pembroke Welsh Corgis and I have one named Lulu. To me, corgis are the most interesting breed of dogs with their satellite-like  ears, stumpy legs, stumpy tail,  and bunny feet. Corgis remind me that even if you can’t match anyone else in size, you can be as strong as you want to be.

2. My Sister

My sister is my best friend and the person I spend the most time with. While she’s 7 years younger than me, we share the same likes and dislikes. She inspires me to work harder and become a better role model.

3. Humor

I believe it’s important to always have something funny in your life. Whether it’s a picture of a corgi poking a hole in bread or a joke, humor is what gets me through the day.

4. Music

Music is what gets me through the day. I listen to music while working, commuting, or hanging out with friends. It helps me unwind and add excitement to my daily routine. I love music that tells stories, builds up, and has an ending.

5. Cooking

Cooking is one of my hobbies. I believe that food brings people together. Through cooking and food, you teach people about your culture or other cultures, create memories, and connect with people.

6. The Newsroom

The Newsroom is my favorite show, because it covers the issues I’m interested in: politics, policies, media, current events, and how people react. The show focuses on the behind the scenes aspect of a news show that’s main goal is to report on what’s important and often purposefully ignored by other media outlets.

7. Internet

I believe that the internet is essential to the people of our generation. The internet offers a wide range of information and has taught me a lot of things; it has allowed me to dream and become creative.

8. Friends

My friends come in all shapes, sizes, shades, and personalities. They’ve become a very important part of my life and have helped me go through thick and thin. They’re people I can trust and connect with, no matter how far we are apart.
