Over the past three months at Baruch College, I feel that the environment is not that different than that of my high school. Most of the people know what they want to do with their life and have almost a clear-cut picture of their next steps. In Baruch’s case, the majority of the students are focusing on business. However, the classes I am taking offer more than one would expect from a business-oriented community; the professors are knowledgable and engaging while the students for the most part are all intriguing and kind.

Personally I feel that despite the opportunities provided here, I am kind of looking for a different experience that I have not yet found in terms of environment, people, and academics. While most of the people here are concentrating on business, I feel more closely related to biology and holistic medicine. Thing is, I am glad to be attending Baruch because it is a fantastic place where I have encountered wonderful people and learned a great deal so far despite my feelings. Therefore, like the photo delineates, I feel that I am unsure of the outcome from my efforts so far, but I know something magnificent is growing-I just have to wait and see.

This meme relates to me because of my Math Professor. Now it is policy that if your professor is more than 15 minutes late you can assume class is cancelled and you are allowed to leave without penalty. I feel this can relate to my college experience because people always want to go home and not have to go to class. As the hope builds up that today just may be the day where he stops to tie his shoe or drops his books and is finally late for that last minute. But just like clockwork he ALWAYS shows up at 14 minutes late and never 15 minutes and you hear the gasp and energy drain out of the class as he walks through the door. Maybe today he might stop for a coffee and finally miss the class.

Penn station during rush hour.

My first semester at college has been extremely stressful. Spending most of my day walking to and from Penn Station, riding the Long Island Railroad, and sitting around in between classes. I ended up spending more time for the commute and doing nothing during breaks than I even spent in class. Penn Station is the worst on fridays. It is completely overcrowded with people rudely pushing walking into me like im not even there. Especially since I get out around rush hour. The best part is I didn’t realize how motion sickness I get on trains. Waking up at least two and a half hours before class in order to make it on time is much more difficult than I had thought. And I have become basically dependent on coffee. I really hope next semester I will be able to make my classes closer together or find a way to have a three day week, which I know will be near impossible.

Although transitioning to college in the city has been tough, I am very glad I picked Baruch in the end. So far I like most of my professors and the people I have met are intellegent and nice.

My experience in Baruch College so far has been a fairly memorable one. I started expecting the worst because I’m not dorming and I wanted the full, typical college experience. As I slowly got used to college life, I began to like it. The workload itself is definitely manageable and I have a lot of free time compared to highschool. On another note, my biggest challenge has been time management, hence the reason I chose a picture of a clock. Besides being a student, I work at a local bakery during most of my free time. On a typical day, I go to school and head to work right after. When I’m not working or going to school, I either study or hang out with friends. Recently, I’ve been making the mistake of prioritizing my leisure time when I should be studying. Even though it’s a challenge, I like keeping myself busy instead of being unproductive. My biggest regret this semester has been not getting involved in a club or organization. Personally, it hasn’t been that easy to meet as many new people as I would’ve liked to since Baruch is a commuter school. My goals for next semester are to get involved in a club or organization, manage my time better, and keep my priorities in check. I am definitely excited for the new experiences that await me.

This is me everyday when I come home. My classes don’t give that much actual homework, it’s just a lot of reading, the train rides suck (especially during rush hours) and having to wake up early suck even more. I’ve really enjoyed my time at Baruch. I found out that college is a whole lot different from high school; the workload may not seem like much but it piles up and even if professors don’t check assignments, you are screwed if you didn’t do anything until the night before a midterm. I think that this first semester is just taking a while to get used to, since senior year was pretty much a joke. I’m sure and hopeful that I will be ready to take on the readings, assignments, and awfully crowded train rides once the second semester comes around. Yay college -_-

My college experience so far has been more of a bland time. When coming to college, I felt as if I would be enjoying myself since I would have a handful of things to do. In reality, life at Baruch was just come, go to class, and then go home. I never really got involved when I started off. I started to join clubs as well as finding things to do during my break and found myself enjoying life at Baruch just a bit more. I have many plans for the future at Baruch and intend to act on them by the time the second semester comes. My expectations when coming to Baruch were completely different than what I had experienced. I’ve met new faces and have seen the passion that the professors at this school have in the work they do. I did experience some sort of culture shock from high school to college but it was a positive shock that I was looking forward to. Sometimes I feel as if Baruch is the place to be and there are times I feel the exact opposite. Only time can tell what Baruch has in store for me.

My College Experience So Far… by Ben-hemir Collado

This picture pretty much sums it up. It seems as though Baruch’s priorities are clear, serve the people that are pursing the majors Baruch is known for, however I honestly I do not find this an issue, mostly because I’ll be going into Baruch’s business school (Zicklin School of Business), but for other reasons as well. When I decided to attend Baruch, I knew what I was getting myself into, and everyone else who comes here should have too.

People need to also realize that the perspective of this photo isn’t really always the case. Baruch’s school of public affairs is expanding and I bet that it is soon to have a powerhouse or majors just like the Zicklin School of Business. So far, my perspective of Baruch is that it’s very business oriented, but that doesn’t mean it is its only focus.

My Workshop Experience by Ben-hemir Collado

The enrichment workshop was pretty inspiring. Throughout its entirety, I thought to myself, “maybe I can be a leader!”. By providing great examples of leadership through the stories of the developers of the Brooklyn Bridge and one of our best presidents, Abraham Lincoln, I figured out good methods of becoming a leader myself. I’ve had leadership experience before, (i.e. captain of the high school cross country team and 4-year peer tutor)  however I did not know how to transition that experience into my college career, until the workshop introduced some awesome clubs I could participate in. Because of this, I know am now a participant of IVCF (Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship) and intend on becoming a part of the business fraternity DSP (Delta Sigma Pi). The enrichment workshop inspired me by becoming a part of something bigger in Baruch, and I’m grateful for it.

5. Rage Valley – Knife Party

6. Forever Is Ours – Armin Van Buuren

7. Live For the Night – Krewella

8. Till the Sky Falls Down – Dash Berlin

According to this music playlist, one can assume that I am a fan of EDM (electronic dance music). For those of you who don’t know, the artists of these songs are renowned DJ’s known worldwide and often play at big festivals and clubs. Personally, I am a big fan of this music and enjoy attending concerts during my free time. On another note, each song in this playlist relates to my life in its own individual way. First of all, the first track (Go It Alone – Dash Berlin), reflects my mindset to success; at times you may need the help of others to overcome obstacles, but they’re not always gonna be there for you. The second and seventh track both relate to the nights when I’m living in the moment and I just wanna have a good time. The fifth track relates to all the times when I get upset or mad, and relieve my stress by listening to music. The last track reminds me to always persevere, especially in the hardest of times, “till the sky falls down”.  For those of you who are reading this, I encourage you to listen to these songs so you can better understand my connections to them.

In my first three months of Baruch, one of my main challenges, was to find a balance between friends, family and grades. It’s been hard to learn how to manage everything when the workload is so different from my high school workload. Another challenge that I’ve faced, is being around so many business oriented people when I recently found that I would rather go into the science field. I felt like I never completely fit in because the mind frames of many of Baruch students is centered around business and money and I don’t really relate to those types of priorities.

Otherwise, Baruch has been really fun so far. One of my favorite things, was going to school in the city because it is so conveniently located. You can find everything within a small radius.
