This is me everyday when I come home. My classes don’t give that much actual homework, it’s just a lot of reading, the train rides suck (especially during rush hours) and having to wake up early suck even more. I’ve really enjoyed my time at Baruch. I found out that college is a whole lot different from high school; the workload may not seem like much but it piles up and even if professors don’t check assignments, you are screwed if you didn’t do anything until the night before a midterm. I think that this first semester is just taking a while to get used to, since senior year was pretty much a joke. I’m sure and hopeful that I will be ready to take on the readings, assignments, and awfully crowded train rides once the second semester comes around. Yay college -_-

Catalina Tapia: Enrichment Workshop
I found the enrichment workshop to be really interesting. I really enjoyed the first presentation because we were given real life examples of how people decided to take the role of a leader. It inspired me to join a few clubs and try to be more involved in them. If I want to meet new people and make Baruch my second home instead of just school, then I have to take that first step.
The student speakers were very informative too. They shared their own experiences about how they didn’t feel the school spirit until they became part of a club. It made me feel that maybe I will be able to feel that school spirit too if I became a member of a group.
The workshop inspired me to consider all the various clubs I have to choose from, and to actually be part of the Bearcat community.
Catalina Tapia: NYT Project
1. What was the “theme” your group selected for your front page, and how did you select it? How did the articles you selected fit within that theme?
– The theme my group selected for our front page was Music; we selected this theme because we are all music lovers and are very passionate about music today. The articles I selected fit into our theme because Electric Zoo is a New York based music festival and the Soulcats are all Baruch students.
2. What was your individual role in the group process working on the NYT project?
– My role in the process of the NYT project was to summarize one random New York Times Article and one Baruch Ticker article.
3. How has your experience within this project influenced your understanding of “news literacy”?
– This project has influenced my understanding of “news literacy” because it has given me more understanding of how essential it is to stay informed about local city news since they have a greater impact on my life. Reading the Baruch news I realized how many activities go on throughout the day and how fellow Bearcats are leaving their paw print in history. I found that reading the weekly newspaper can be very helpful in understanding the college a lot better.

My favorite living creature is my dog Mika. He’s a Great Dane and when he stands up he’s taller than me. Since I was very young Scooby-Doo was my favorite cartoon, and I dreamed of having my own Scooby to go on adventures with. My dream came true because although my dog looks intimidating, he’s scared of everything and always hides under me when he’s afraid.
I love nature and I’m always trying to stay close to it. Living in the city, it’s always the best when I get to get away from paved streets and explore the woods. I really enjoy climbing trees but I always have a hard time coming down. The only thing I hate about nature are the creepy crawlers, especially when they try to land on me. Not cool.
My family is VERY important to me. My parents are the only family I have because every one else is back in Chile. I love them so much even though they have too much fun embarrassing me. We always make time during our busy schedules to discuss our day or talk about how we’re doing. My parents are just really cool.
My favorite pass time is playing music. I’ve always tried to learn as many instruments as possible because I think that it’s so beautiful how you can make sweet music from them. I can play guitar, bass, the bagpipes, clarinet, and trombone. My favorite is trombone! It’s such a bizarre looking instrument but the sounds that thing can make are sweeeeet.
Sons of Anarchy is currently my favorite t.v. series. It has all the things I like: motorcycles, bearded men, tattoos, explosions, and bearded men. My favorite character was killed off though, so I haven’t been keeping up with it. Hopefully I’ll get a motorcycle license soon so I can pretend I’m cool like these guys.
My favorite band is Black Flag. They can be described as really angry punk. Their songs are fast, fun and always seem to show exactly how I’m feeling. I went to their show September 19, and I almost cried from joy/excitement. I was a total fan girl! Their songs always seem to cheer me up and make me want to dance.
My friends are the best. They’re always there for me and they usually know how to cheer me up. Even though we don’t see each other as often as we used to, we all know in our hearts that we would do anything for each other. They’ve helped me sort out some “tough” life problems! “all for one, and one for all”
I’ve always enjoyed reading books. I adore reading books, but only when I get to choose them and I don’t have to write an essay after. I wish I had more time for my books but school has taken over all my free time for reading. Books are a way of escaping my world and be inside someone else’s world, whether I might end up in Middle Earth or inside Holden Caulfield’s head, it’s always a different adventure.
