NY Times Blog Post 2 – Abil Abraham

Our group selected education as our theme for the New York Times Project. We decided to pick that theme because its obviously a very important subject. We are all here at Baruch for that reason, and its our role as students, to get an education. Its something that people often take for granted. We forget that not everyone is fortunate enough to get such a valuable resource.  Each of our articles were related to education in some way. The article “Students Accused of Cheating…” discusses the issue of academic integrity and makes readers think about the flaws in the education system. The article “The Charter School Fight”  discusses the role of education in politics, and how it is an important debate issue. The article “Top Test Scores From Shanghai Stun Educators” takes a look at education in a global view and how education varies from country to country. The article “Losing Is Good for You” discusses how it might be good to accept a loss sometimes which can also transfer over to education. The article “Overscheduled Children…” talks about the importance of balancing your life of education and your social life. The article “An Education in Equality” looks at the importance of equality in education and how very often it is doesn’t happen. My role in the group for the project was administrator. I assigned everyone’s readings and compiled everyone’s work on to the front page. From this project I learned how with every story there are multiple sides. You have to look at each point of view carefully before making any decisions or judgments, the real truth maybe hidden.

Group 1 NY Times Blog Post (Andrew, Shirley, Julia, Michelle, and Michael)

Health and Fitness FRO Blog Post Picture

Our group’s NY Times articles focus on the underlying theme of health and fitness. The articles and our summaries can be found in the link at the bottom of the post. Below are each of our articles including why we specifically selected them and how they relate to our first semester at Baruch.

1)Curbing the Enthusiasm on Daily Multivitamins by Roni Caryn Rabin (Andrew)

We chose this article for our class to see one more reason a multivitamin is only a beneficial supplement everyone should be including in their diet. While it has a myriad of other rewarding purposes, reducing your risk of cancer even by a fractional percentage sounds advantageous to one’s well-being. We feel this article reflects to our first semester at Baruch to remind us of ways to boost our well-being to be proactive against any stress that might come our way.

2)New York Soda Ban to Go Before State’s Top Court by Michael M Grynbaum (Shirley)

Mayor Bloomberg is trying to limit the size of sugary drinks and plans to take this case to the Court of Appeals. Sugary drinks is said to be a main component in the rise of obesity in New York City. We’re sure everyone has had experience with sugary drinks at least once in their lives. This article is important to not only students at Baruch, but also everyone in New York City. We should all take precautions to limit our intake of soft drinks to prevent ourselves from obesity.

3)The Arsenic in Our Drinking Water by Deborah Blum (Julia)
Scientists claim that arsenic is commonly found in public drinking water, which harms many people across the United States. The exposure to arsenic in drinking water and food supply has furtively caused a range of malignancies such as respiratory infections and malfunction of immune cells. As a result, scientists claim that arsenic is a rise to a new health problem that needs to be taken seriously. Our group selected this article because it is important for Baruch students to be aware of the negative effects of arsenic pertaining to the water system. We feel that health is really important for everyone to consider, and we hope that that there is no arsenic detected in the public drinking water system in Baruch.

4)Uganda Fights Stigma and Poverty to Take On Breast Cancer by Denise Grady (Michelle)

We selected this article because we realized how grateful we should be to live in the United States. We have many doctors here who can help up at our discretion, whereas in Uganda, there are limited doctors. This pertains to our first semester at Baruch because we realized that we’re in college and there are some times when we might get stressed. We should try to get our work on time and take care of our health instead of cramming for tests or drinking coffee to wake us up. We should also all exercise more.

5)States Are Focus of Effort to Foil Health Care Law by Sheryl Gay Stolberg (Michael)

This article is about how the states are reacting to President Obamas health care plan. Most states are now considering the idea of adopting the laws in order to officially end the government shutdown. We picked this article because this dispute affects every single person in the United States. It’s obviously a very important subject since our whole government was closed, and it also shows the division between the parties. Being half way into our first semester at Baruch, this event has open every ones eyes to the fact that we are no longer children and that the adult world of politics will affect us more than it ever has before.
