Blog Post Two Andrew Elkhouly

My group focused on the theme of health and fitness for our New York Times Project. We each found one article to talk about what we found intriguing to our current knowledge. Also, I wrote a short passage about Baruch’s Fitness Facility for the Bear cat section. We specially spoke about the benefits of multivitamins, the current controversy going on with soda in New York City, health issues in Uganda, and other relevant health topics. One thing I learned from my article on multivitamins was how multivitamins can indeed lower rates of cancer in males over forty.

My experience working on this New York Times project was pleasant. My group was able to cooperate and finish this project very quickly.

My group chose to make health the theme of our project. We used this theme because many people disregard their health when they go to college. We wanted to bring some health issues to attention and remind everyone to take care of themselves. I chose my article because it is about a national issue. The article reminded me that political issues will now affect me more than ever. My role in the group was to find a article about health on a national scale and to provide a summary about it. This project helped me understand how to organize with a group and put together new articles with a similar theme.

For our group project, I feel we had a difficult time just settling on a topic. There were so many different things that we wanted to focus on, however, we managed to find a commonality in all the subjects. When we first started to construct our NYT page, I named it Race Relations, because that’s exactly what out main focus on. It was on the actions and reactions of people of different race. Our topic did not necessarily have to do with discrimination, but how diversity of race has effected our city, our country, and our world. I felt that it was difficult to narrow down a topic that we could use, but by settling for the topic we have, i felt that it was broad enough and narrow enough for all my group members to have different kinds of articles that served the same purpose.

The articles that i chose had to do with the increase in minority unionized workers and racial discrimination in a sorority. I chose the article with the minority unionized workers because I felt that it showed how the diversity of race  in our city is changing the functions of everyday life. We as a city are continuously diversifying every force there is whether it be the work force or the political arena. However, there are the downfalls of this diversity, which is why i thought the racial discrimination article was very appropriate. It showed that, yes, our population is diversifying, however the cost of that would be that the disapproval for this blend. People who are not accepting of diversifying in regards to race will sometimes show that disapproval. That is just something that people will have to deal with because there will always be a person who has their prejudices.

The theme we chose as a group was education. All our group members took interest into articles about education, so we decided to make that our central theme.

I chose my two articles early, so I got our group on track for the theme of education. I also worked with Abil to set up the site and discussed how our detailed paragraphs should be structured.

The first article I chose was titled “Losing Is Good For You.” The title of the article is peculiar and caught my attention. You wouldn’t expect losing to be good for you. I loved the idea presented because it was something that was true, but something no one really focuses on. Winning isn’t necessarily the best thing because it takes away from the aspect of learning and growing. The same goes for my second article, “Top Test Scores From Shanghai Stun Educators.” In Shanghai, the education system is valued greatly. It gets a lot more attention than recreational activities. This is why they have scored higher than other nations on the Program for International Student Assessment. The article discusses how America is always behind, ranking third in the PISA, and it needs to advance in certain areas before other nations.

America, like the students of America, needs to focus more on learning and growing, not just winning. Students today believe getting good grades is the goal, but they are missing the part where they actually learn and advance themselves.

This experience got me interested in news articles. I was able to draw connections between articles that were discussing different things. They were interesting and I felt more aware of the changing world. I will definitely continue searching up articles.

Midterm Retake

Dear Professor,

I understand that there was a scheduled midterm on the 21st of October, however I was unable to take due to a severe illness. I do not want my grades to go down because of this. Therefore, it would be highly appreciated if you would allow me to take a re-take of the exam. Please let me know. Thank you.

Professor Braimah,

I was unable to attend class today due to a high fever and food poisoning and I am aware I missed the midterm. Attached is a scan of the documentation of my doctor’s visit. I will bring in the official form next class so we can discuss how I can make up the missed midterm as soon as possible.
Thank you,

The theme we chose as a group revolved around diversity. Since our group was mixed with ethnicities, we decided to choose articles that show diversity in all its ways. My individual role was to find two articles that illustrate the advantage of a diverse school and how can a school with a predominant ethnicity affects other individuals in that particular school. This project gave me the incentive to dig more and look for more articles that explain the strength and weaknesses of a particular subject.

Dear Professor Braimah,

This is Danislene Foueback from your ENGLISH 2100 10:20am class. I am sorry for missing the midterm last Wednesday, I was admitted to the hospital the night before. I regret missing the exam, and I am hoping you might be able to give me a chance to retake the exam. I wouldn’t like an illness to decrease my chances of passing your class.

I would appreciate whichever option you give me.

Sincerely,

Danislene Foueback K. ENG 2100, 10:20-12am
