The playlist I’ve created consists of a mix of classics and Glee songs, where I hope to show the importance of hopes, dreams, believing and encouragement in my life. The reason why I chose to keep the Glee version of the songs rather than the original is mainly because the show, when paired up with the songs, connects to me a bit more. The same September I started high school was the time the pilot for Glee started airing. So many things have happened during those four years of high school, and it’s really changed me as an individual. I found hope in the songs and in the stories that surrounded the songs as portrayed by the show, because I could relate to that high school environment. Now that I’m starting college, these songs seem to correlate once again, while in a different context, but no doubt bringing about hope and a story of dreams. The first “Don’t Dream It’s Over” pretty much signifies that transition between High School and College. While high school hasn’t exactly been the smoothest four years, it did mean a lot to me, and the song is a message that even though I’m starting a new phase in life, I shouldn’t lose hope in it, but instead move on strongly. The next two songs, “True Colors”, “All or Nothing” and “Loser Like Me” are very similar in my connection to them because they represent an individual’s belief in herself and the will to give it her all. There have been many times where I felt lost amongst the big crowds at college, and often looked down upon just for being myself, but the songs speaks of how it’s okay to be yourself, and not to always care about the way others judge you, because there will be people out there who appreciates you for who you are. “In My Life” is a song where I think the title pretty much sums up everything about it. It’s a walk down memory lane back to my high school life, but also telling the story of basically, life. As for the final Glee song I used, “Don’t Stop Believin'”, I don’t think there’s a better song out there for Glee and for myself in the past few years. At this point of life, while we can work hard, have fun, and worry about the millions of crazy things out there, our greatest ability comes in our ability to dream and believe. As for the classics, since most of my songs are centered around the idea of hopes and dreams, they are also chosen for that reason. “It Was a Very Good Year” at one point mentions the story of a seventeen year old like me, whereas “Over The Rainbow” is directly encouraging one’s ability to dream and believe. “Through the Rain” is a song of encouragement and belief that there’s hope out there, and also because I like rainy weathers. Finally, I chose “Hedwig’s Theme” because I adore Hogwarts and I hope that Baruch can be as amazing as Hogwarts.
That was great! I totally agree; there are some Glee versions of songs that I like more and can connect to better.
I love Harry Potter too! I hope you find your own version of Hogwarts at Baruch!
