Blog post #4 Enrichment Workshop

For the enrichment workshop our learning community went to watch the documentary called Changing Minds At Concord High School.  This documentary outlined a new scientific research that incorporated a mindfulness program in a high risk high school to teach students new “strategies to better regulate their attention and emotion.” Students, in the high school, now incorporated meditation into their every day lives (3 minutes per day) to relax their minds. This gave promising results: higher graduation rate, better grades and less stress from students.

I totally agree with this technique. From personal experience, I can easily say, people, especially my age, tend to overthink about too much and stress themselves out. Students, piled with homework, schoolwork, new responsibilities, don’t know how to properly to express their issues, which in turn causes them to clog it all in their head which causes stress. That stress causes other problems, such as lower grades or worsened behavior.

Mind relaxation is very important in order to be able to properly unstress yourself. Of course meditation may not be for everyone, but any technique, which takes your mind from all problems, is enough. Some people play sports or workout, others, more artistic, draw or write. Personally I run. Not everyday because I’m to lazy to get up early, but I try to run every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. It has nothing to do with trying to get fit (clearly I’m going to need more than that) but I run to clear my mind, to think about nothing. It is calming and clears all unnecessary stress.
