This was my first presentation since stepping foot into Baruch, and I’m fairly confident that our group did fairly well for the first time. I made it my goal to make eye contact with every person in the room. It wasn’t always that simple. Making eye contact and standing up in front of an audience are things that I struggled with when I was younger. It used to make me feel vulnerable and exposed. However, presentations are common occurrences in high school, so after a while, you just want to get it over with. One thing I always keep in mind is that it’s not awkward unless you make it awkward. Preparation is the key. This presentation was relatively easy because it was a topic that was interesting, and because I wrote a 7- page short story based on human sex trafficking. When others presented, it was easy to point out their flaws and mistakes in presenting, but when I was up there myself, it was hard to not look up at our webpage for reassurance. Many of these things are things that we do unconsciously, similar to bad habits. I hope that with more time and practice, my communication skills will greatly improve.
