Blog Post #1: Kiranpreet Sawhney

So, I did a sideshow and it can be viewed at the following link: http://slide.ly/view/c35b98fdbd0652b73a021a5dafbc3c15

My name is Kiranpreet Kaur Sawhney (but you can call me Kiran). I am from India. I came here when I was three-and-half years old. I am interested in playing sports, but I am not great at anyone of them. I enjoy playing tennis, soccer, basketball, bowling and badminton, most of which I learned to play in middle school and high school. I always wanted to learn how to play hockey (on ice) because it seemed like so much fun.

I have also learned Taekwondo and Gatka (Sikh martial arts). Its been five years since I started learning Gatka. I still have a lot to learn, but I teach kids who want to learn Gatka every weekend. I am part of a NY Gatka team and we perform at many parades and cultural events.

Along with martial arts, I have been part of Virsa, my high school’s bhangra dance group. Bhangra is an Indian folk dance from Punjab. It is a very energetic dance and usually performed at happy events like weddings and parties. Our school held a Festival of Nations (FON) in which our group was one of many other dance groups to represent our culture.

Like many people, I love music because it has the power to connect with me. It can lift my mood after a tough day or help me calm down after a fight. I listen to both English and Hindi songs. I enjoy watching Bollywood because its very dramatic and entertaining. My favorite Bollywood movie is ‘3 Idiots,’ which is a comical movie addressing the community’s tendency of forcing their children into careers they may not want to pursue.

Travelling around the world has been my dream ever since I was a child because of all the interesting and new places I would get to visit. My friends and I hope to be able to tour together and try new things like sky diving or hiking the mountains. I also hope to study abroad to experience living in a foreign country and using this experience to help me grow.

Finally, the picture with the kittens is from the time I dissected a pregnant cat for my Anatomy and Physiology lab. In the uterus of the cat we found these four kittens.  This was one of my favorite labs because I find dissections very exciting. It allows us to apply what we learned about the body through the textbook and see it first hand. So that is how all those pictures relate to me.

P.S. I’m sorry that this is so long.
