Blog Post #3 – Career

On September 29th most of the FRO class and myself attended the PES/WIB/USG/UCLA Resume Workshop with JP Morgan during FRO (thanks Jawad!) Not only was this workshop great because we didn’t have to sit through a session of FRO but I also learned a lot of great tips for creating a resume and attacking an interview. Even though I’m a freshman and I’m not able to apply to places like JP Morgan was still very insightful and I hope to put these tips to use while editing my own resume and hopefully interviewing for companies in the future!

The Club Fair – Blog Post #2

IMG_01252When I was choosing the right college Baruch boasted about its 160+ clubs on its website and I knew one oft hem had to be right for me. The club fair on October 1st marked the beginning of a new month and the beginning of my involvement at Baruch. Though the club fair did not have all 160 clubs, there were myriad of different clubs ranging from The Wall Street club to a League of Legends club. As I walked around the gym, I admit that I was not especially drawn to any particular club, however I still signed up for the Muslim Student Association and Phi Eta Sigma. I look forward to attend meetings and events for these clubs, meet new people and become more involved. The buzz of excitement from freshman, free candy and ton of clubs made the club fair a worthwhile experience.

Cats meow and dogs V.A.R.K.

For some students the beginning of a new school year comes along with a set of new goals. In my case, one goal in particular that I set for myself is to stop procrastinating and use my time more effectively. This goal comes hand in hand with another goal, which is to study better.

The V.A.R.K questionnaire helps students find the best way to study and upon completion of the questionnaire students can find the best strategies to prepare for different classes. This insightful questionnaire can be found in the back of our handy Freshman Seminar Student Handbook. The title of this post, though punny, can be misleading because V.A.R.K. is actually an acronym that stands for Visual, Aural, Read/Write and Kinesthetic.

After completing a series 16 multiple choice consisting of different scenarios, the answers point a person to the type of learner they are. I scored 4 for visual, 6 for aural, and tied 7 for both read/write and kinesthetic. This was a partly shocking and partly known discovery for me as I always knew I was a fan of a more hands-on approach of learning but I always found reading and writing to be long and tedious. I look forward to weave these new found strategies to my study regimen in order to (hopefully) achieve my goal of a more productive school year.
