For my choice of an academic event, I decided to take advantage of one the many exciting things New York City has to offer by choosing to visit an NYC museum. I picked going to a museum rather than the other options on the list simply because I wanted to take this assignment as an opportunity to force myself to do something new. Therefore, I went online and research museums in New York City with free days or reduced prices for students so that I would not have to spend too much money on this trip. I ended up finding several results for places like the Guggenheim Museum that runs on a pay what you wish basis on Saturdays from 5:15 to 7:15 and the Museum of the City of New York that is free on Sunday mornings from 10am to 12pm. However, I knew I would be too busy on those days and decided to search for museums available on Fridays.
On Fridays, The Museum of Modern Art, also known as MoMA, are completely open to the public for free from 4:00 pm to 8:00pm. Upon arriving at the MoMA this Friday, I was already anticipating a long run which I did encounter, however, it was not nearly as bad as I had expected and the wait was only around 15 minutes.
Once I was inside the building, the security guard checked my free ticket and backpack for inspection. I was also required to put my bag in a locker or wear my backpack facing forward otherwise I would not be allowed to go further. I would this rule to be strange but noticed lots of people wearing their backpacks forwards so complied. This unfortunately put a damper on my evening because my backpack was quite heavy at the time and wearing it in that fashion was somewhat painful. However, I was still able to check out some artwork on the some of the floors and spent a large chunk of time in their beautiful garden outside.
I am glad I went to this museum to see the gorgeous artwork and intend on doing it again soon. However, next time to improve the quality of the trip, I would try to pay more attention to reading the names and authors of the artwork instead of looking at the art.
