My Experience at Writing Center Workshop

On Thursday, September 7th, I attended a writing center workshop. It was a workshop on interpreting assignments. I attended the workshop because I thought it will help me with the writing assignments I get in my English class. I was hoping to learn good advice on how to approach these writing assignments.

An instructor asked us to come up with expectations for writing assignments. The instructor taught us what a professor is trying to assess by giving us these assignments. We were also asked to come up with resources we can use if we ever need help with a writing assignment.

We were given a sample assignment prompt to read. We were also given a worksheet to fill out based on the prompt. The purpose of the worksheet was to help us determine the goal of the prompt. The worksheet helped us separate the different components of the prompt that the professor is asking for. After everyone was done with the worksheet, we went over it. The instructor listed writing steps for approaching this prompt.

We were also given other sheets. One sheet listed verbs that a professor may use when giving these assignments. For each verb, it states what the professor is asking for when that verb is used. The other sheet was about how to understand the instructions of an assignment. It listed certain instructions that may be given, examples of those instructions, and the implied goals of those instructions.

Overall, I was satisfied with my workshop experience. I learned how to approach writing assignments. I learned how to interpret these assignments and find out what they are asking for. This experience will help me complete the future writing assignments that I get. So, that was how this workshop assisted me during my first semester at Baruch College.
