Freshman Seminar Fall 17 DTB

Blog Post 3 Career

To fulfill my last blog, I decided to attend the majors and minors fair. I learned about this event from an email. After reading this my friends and I decided to visit on that Thursday during club hours. I did not know what to expect from the fair and did not want to attend at first, but I am really glad I did. At the fair there were many experienced individuals willing to help and answer any question students had. There were several tables set up at the fair for each major or minor. Each table was handing out flyers with thorough information about that major or minor. You could also speak to the individual at the tables, who were professors or student leaders. They were very knowledgeable and had abundant information on the major or minor they represented. Coming into Baruch, I knew exactly what i wanted to major in, which is accounting. However, I did not know what minor to choose. The fair helped me explore all my options. I looked into minors such as law or finance. These two minors go hand-in-hand with my major which would be very beneficial for me. Either of these minors would teach me skills helping me to excel in the field. The fair not only gave me more knowledge on my desired major, but also minors that are interesting to me. In all, I am very glad I attended the majors and minors fair because I have gained helpful information that will aid in me choosing a minor. If I had not visited this fair I would have still been confused on which road to take for the future.

Academic Enrichment

For my academic enrichment blog I decided to attend a math 2207 workshop. I chose this option not for the sole purpose of this blog but also because I was falling behind in class and needed some help. Growing up, I loved math and numbers. I always seemed to do better in my math class than any other subject. However, that all changed very quickly. From the first day of calculus I was completely lost. I struggled to keep up with the professor and her lessons. To catch up, I would try to teach myself the material at home but it  was never really successful. I would either give up or fall asleep. After  my first math exam last week I realized that I might need some help. This is why I decided to attend the math workshop. Although I was hesitant to attend since it started at 10 in the morning on a Saturday, (which is way too early for me on a weekend) I still decided to go and I am glad I did. Our tutors name was Abraham Tai and he was an amazing tutor. He explained the answers thoroughly and went over several problems with the group. He made sure everybody understood what was going on and that nobody was left behind. I remember watching him work out a complex problem all in his head in a matter of seconds. After seeing that, I realized that Abraham Tai is the real deal and that I was in the right place. I understood more calculus in those two hours than I have in the past weeks. I am very pleased that I attended and experienced this workshop because now I will be more willing to attend the following ones. I also would like to attend a one on one tutoring session too. I did not like the feeling of being unprepared while taking my first exam in class. I hope to be more prepared and confident when taking my next exam and I know will be if I keep attending these workshops.

Student Life Enrichment – Aamina

To fulfill my first blog requirement, I decided to join a club. However, I stumbled upon Beta Alphi Psi. I decided to learn more about this honor society after gaining knowledge that it is a professional business honor society. At first, I just needed something to write about for my blog but now it has become something more than that. When talking to someone at the BAP table, I learned that this honor society can benefit me in numerous ways. It provides opportunities for me to network with professionals in the accounting industry. Which is what I am planning on majoring in. BAP will also encourage to get me out of my comfort zone, something I truly need to work on knowing that I am going into a field that expects this. Not only will BAP help me in my future, but it will also help me now during my college years. It has made me excited to hopefully become involved and even join more clubs. Commuting back and forth everyday leaves me with little time to spend on campus. I have become so busy with my new schedule that I did not think to join any clubs or an honor society. This will urge me to spend more time on campus rather than at home. With joining BAP I know I will be able to get that real college feel. Hopefully I will be able to find time and be able to commit to it because I know it is something I can take a lot from.  I am glad that I was assigned this blog because without it I would not have been able to learn about Beta Alphi Psi. I want to be ready for my future and I have no doubt that BAP can help me prepare for it.
