When I entered college I came in with a career idea, to become an accountant. But, other than completing my course requirements to enter into the BBA program for accounting in Zicklin I don’t know where to start my career. Then I heard about the Starr Career Development Center in Baruch and the resources it can provide for me to establish my career in detail from my FRO course. Later on the same day I was informed about Starr center I attended a information session held by the America Needs You program (A.N.Y.) in the evening. The A.N.Y. program was founded with theĀ goal to assist college freshman from low income background to develop their career by assigning percipients of the program called “fellow” with successful professionals from fields that are in the area of the student’s intended major offering individual support. Support ranges from developing resume, communication skills, networking, etc. During the session I was informed of the requirements needed to apply for the program which are as follows be a college freshman, be available on Saturdays for workshops, be considered low-income by HUD standards, eligible to work in the U.S., and is a first-generation college student (neither parents have a bachelor’s degree). In addition, there was a panel of current fellows and their mentors explaining their experience in the program and what they gained from it. For instance, their responses to the question of what they gained from the program were similar to the bonds they formed with each other as mentees and mentors on a professional and personal level. To be able to make a connection with someone from a field you are interested is valuable to develop skills to work in the field. After the session was over I was very interested in applying for this program to better understand the field of accounting from someone who is well experience in it

Trip to the Museum of Natural History
Back when I attended elementary school in the Bronx every year my teacher would organize a trip to the Museum of Natural History. I could remember myself excited to go every time, not to see the exhibits provided at the museum but because the trip got me out of school from working mundane schoolwork. In addition, I was able bring my Gameboy color or Nintendo DS and play on the bus ride since schools trips allowed me to do so. Other than what I listed I found the trip to the museum boring, just another attempt of the adults tried to make history interesting. The only exhibit that caught my eye was the ocean exhibit since the way they arranged the exhibit made it feel as though I was underwater surrounded with seas animals and a massive model whale hanging on the ceiling.
Now it has been almost 8 years since my last visit until October 6, 2017. I decided to visit the museum to satisfy the conditions to post this blog for my freshmen seminar class, after all the information I learned about history since those past 8 years in middle school, high school, and currently in at Baruch I have new perspective when looking at those exhibits. Unlike in elementary I had the freedom to walk around the museum and explore. In each exhibit I looked at there wasn’t one thing I didn’t have some understanding on from African culture, human origins, Hall of meteorites, Northwest Coast Indians, etc. Another difference from then and now was I looking at those exhibits, those pieces of history I felt excited. To know that each of those exhibits played a significant role in forming the world we live in at the present. I found it somewhat inspiration to see such pieces in person unlike reading about them in textbooks, then I wonder what could happen today and years forward that’ll become an exhibit in this museum. Then I stopped looking at a model of the planet Earth to reflect on myself over the past years to measure how much I have grown since my visits as a child in understanding my history, my morals, my experiences, and my choices. Then thought how I was still growing, maturing, and experiences that await me in the future. I have no idea what will happen in 10,25, or 50 years from now, how the world we live in will change, but I and everyone on this planet has a part in creating that future. Whether big or small of an impact its the combination of those impacts that makes history. If I manage to live at an old age and that museum is still around I might go back and measure my growth again, my history.
Anime Asylum experience (First Year Seminar)
Hello everyone, I like to express my experience attending the general meeting for the Anime Asylum club on September 7 from 12:40 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. It’s very comforting to be surrounded by people who share a common interest/likeness as me in which we can have conversations about and in the future watch together, that is anime. In high school I would often part take in heated debates regarding plots, characters, cannon, and possible outcomes of some anime shows such as Dragon Ball Z Super, One Piece, Naurto, Pokemon, etc. with friends and it was really fun that would relieve some stress on upcoming exams. I found the Anime Asylum through browsing the clubs Baruch had to offer on their website to see if there was any clubs I would be interested in joining. I didn’t sign up for it up till the club fair in late August during the Freshmen orientation. My hope in joining this club is to form friends and have conversations through anime as I did in high school. In my first general meeting in Anime Asylum on September 7 I was able to meet members of the club as we all introduce ourselves. Stating our names, favorite anime, and what major we’re pursuing. We also saw saw some clips of Nichijou off of Youtube and chowed on some pizza while listening to anime music near the end of the meeting. I was able to have a few conversations with some members involving anime we have been watching recently. Can’t wait to get to know more of the members in this club. As I continue my journey in Baruch I hope to form friendships that’ll walk with me in this journey and perhaps beyond it as well. I will be updated in future meetings through their facebook page and email. Hope you all have fun in whatever clubs you have joined.
Peace.
