Freshman Seminar Fall 17 DTG

Homecoming for a CUNY school wasn’t what I expected. It was really cool to see al the activities that were provided for the students and new ways to join clubs, meet new people, watch a funny sports game and be introduced to the many cultures of Baruch. Brittany and I really wanted to get Henna but we kept missing the booth, it was upsetting but it would’ve been cool if we were able to get it because from what we saw the other people getting it was gorgeous. We also then went to the gym and watched a flag football game, it was all fun and games at first but then it got really serious when some of our classmates decided to join the game. It almost felt like a real life sports experience because we got the foam fingers, t-shirts, and those cheerleader type pom poms. It was really fun and cool to hang out with everyone and have something to do to pass the 3 hour wait period before our next class. It’s nice to see how Baruch really tries to have a “private” college experience for Homecoming. I really feel like I’m getting used to the school and I’m not scared to meet people as much anymore. Now I know that I’ll be ready for next semester, I of course won’t be perfect and will have a couple of slip ups but that’s part of the college experience. Homecoming, club hours, the freshman seminar classes and all the offices that Baruch has to offer is a part of the experience. They are all there to help when you think you have now where else to go. Now even with the advisors that are given to us it will make the process easier. Homecoming was such a fun time and it made me realize that Baruch is an even bigger community than I thought it was.

This past week I attended the MOMA with some of my old friends from high school. Although I was a bit out of my element, it was cool seeing the many art pieces that the museum had to offer, but I felt that at times when I was actually trying to be serious and observe some of the things my friends would make jokes that would cause me to laugh and probably disturb the other people that were in there. It was so cool to be able to see more modern art, it wasn’t like the Brooklyn Museum so much because in that one it was SUPER quiet. We weren’t allowed to touch anything and I felt scared to even cough. although I’m not saying that in the Moma we were allowed to yell but there was a certain type of freedom. It was cool to see old art as well, there was a gallery collection from the 1880s to the 1950s one of them being Van Gogh’s starry night! I’m not too sure if it was the real one but it was crazy because I remember always learning and reading about it in elementary school. For some reason my art teacher at that time loved talking about that specific art piece and explained how it was based off of van Gogh’s observations, memories, thoughts and emotions on not only his life but what he sees in the world’s natural state (Don’t know why I’m able to still remember that). So to be able to see that in real life got me super excited and that’s being inside a museum! It really taught me to appreciate things that we learn not only in school but just things that people really enjoy and who knows maybe some part of you would like it too. I’m not an art fanatic now, but I now know a little bit as to why some people are very serious about this work.

This past week was full of many exciting events held by the Baruch faculty and I had a lot of fun, everyone was enthusiastic and very welcoming to us freshman and of course other students as well. One event that I wasn’t even expecting was Latin Heritage month, all I saw near the student life center was a DJ and many flags and automatically I knew something was going on. At first I thought it was just another club fair because I saw the Ticker as well as the Caribbean culture club, but then my friends and I saw the photo booth and we immediately saw the Latin Heritage month Sign under the pictures.  When the music started playing so did the party, we first went to attend the Model United Nations club meeting because I was really interested in joining, as soon as that was finished we went back to the student life area. My friend tried to teach me the Bachata even though I refused at first because I didn’t want anyone to see me butchering the dance, but I thought what the heck who cares. Funny enough other people joined for a little bit but then the student life hosts were starting a game called mar/tierra meaning sea/water and then students would have to jump side to side with each side corresponding to each word and it was really funny seeing some of the upperclassmen taking the game really seriously . They played the game a couple of times and it was absolutely hilarious to watch, they also had a station where they were giving out free books which was really kind and helpful. We then headed to the game room which was really cool although I learned that I am terrible at fouseball and no one should ever let me play the game again. Overall the event was great and I can’t wait to attend more.
