Freshman Seminar Fall 17 DTG

Career blog

Earlier this month, I went to the tech fair. There, I learned about new start-up companies and how they developed since they have started.  People spoke about how they started their companies and gave tips on how they developed it into what it is today. The question and answer section was very beneficial about the students received answers to their concerns. The students’ questions allowed the speakers to go into depth about their companies, for example, who they networked with and their trial and error. Also, we had an amazing opportunity to associate ourselves with the people from the start-up companies. It was a great opportunity to network and put ourselves out there so that maybe in the future we could possibly have a job waiting for us outside of college. We were also welcomed to bring our resumes to show the employees of these companies that we were interested and to also see if we met the qualifications for these jobs. Start-up companies are very important because they share the skills you need to have in order to be successful in the business world. Even though this fair gave many students an amazing opportunity to network, it gave me a lot of insight and information on these companies.

Since the semester has started, a couple of friends and I have visited the Museum of Sex multiple times. The first time we were just strolling around during club hours and we happened to stumble upon it. I was nervous because the sign outside said that you must be eighteen years or older. Since I am still seventeen-I am always the youngest in my group of friends- I was scared that they would kick us out. We walked in and I was shocked. There were dildos, condoms, sex toys, and sex books everywhere. I was completely shocked. I found myself acting like a kid in a candy store, wondering what each item was and its purpose. About 2 weeks later we brought more two friends with us to the museum. Their reaction was priceless. We realized that there was another part of the of the museum and to enter the museum was $18.50 for students, so we plan on going back soon to see that exhibit. The fact that there is a whole museum dedicated to sex showed me that most of the society views sex as an art. I was surprised about the number of people inside. People of all sexualities.

On Thursday, a couple of friends and I went decided to go to the Model UN meeting. When we arrived, they decided to start the meeting off which icebreakers. Everyone was divided into for groups. We were given a series of questions, like make a line from shortest to tallest and line up in the order of birthdays. It was really fun, everyone enjoyed themselves and we also got the chance to learn little details about the people in the club. After the icebreakers we done, we sat down to discuss the purpose of the club and the amount of commitment. Honestly, I did not really know what the United Nations was really about. Representatives from each country gathered at an event and discuss world peace, but at these events, all the representatives from each country come together to create new resolutions every year. Hearing all the requirements for the club, I was a little iffy about joining it. The club leaders explained that they do a lot of traveling and they miss a couple of instructional school days. Then one of the club leaders asked a question that really made me think. He asked, “Would you rather want to be in a class with the same people you have been seeing through out the same semester, or would you rather skip a couple of classes to go to an United Nations convention and meet about 5,000 new people and see faces you might now ever see again?” Towards the end of the meeting, I began to ask myself was this club really for me? I do not think I would be able to commit to that amount of time, especially because the club meetings are during Tuesday club hours and I have a class during that time. Throughout the upcoming weeks, I plan to look for a club that fits my interests and my schedule.
