Freshman Seminar Fall 17 DTG

Blog #3- Starr Career

Over my past few months at Baruch I have ran into signs of the Starr career center more times than I can count. My first time in Baruch when I was on a campus tour my director actually made a reference to the Starr career development center and mentioned how they had professional training, where clothing would be offered if a person didn’t have or how they should dress and handle themselves at a business dinner.  They also have many resources where you basically do no work at all besides making a resume and typing in what kind of internship you are looking for. Despite me not being a finance major the Starr Career Development Center introduced me to the financial leadership program, that has a special curriculum for your junior and senior year filled with workshops to have you more prepared for the business world. This was really unbelievable for me and if i ever decided to go into finance from marketing in the next few months I would definitely look into this program. This program also helps you find a job, so you are basically  set post graduation which is difficult for a college graduate to say especially in this economy.  Finding out about the Starr career center assisted me because now that i know clearly what is available to me, i can and will go to them for any questions. I can also be more focused on looking and applying for internships since I know there are counselors at the office who can advise me on the different types of internships. Finding out about the Starr  career development center  makes me proud that I selected Baruch  as my college because I was close to selecting Brooklyn College since they are so close to me and their business school just recently became certified. I definitely feel that Baruch has a  great deal of services and I am thankful for them as well as having the Freshman Seminar class to help make my transition to college smoother.

Blog #2-Academic

My trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art was really enjoyable, especially since it was my first time going. The museum is really far from where I live so I would always hesitate when thinking about going. However the Met was worth the trip. There was a lot of medieval gear such as armor and swords which was cool to see since i recognized this from a game i used to play, Runescape. Also i saw weapons from the time of the Ottoman empire which were very finely crafted and had many gemstones on them such as rubies. These weapons also consisted of Arabic writing, which was interesting for me since I could read Arabic. However, the writing style was ancient so I could not make out the words, only certain letters. It was also nice seeing Muslim holy books or their different kinds of architecture because i had only heard of the Muslims having a great empire extending from Spain to China. The empire lasted for hundreds of years and it was unbelievable seeing relics from that time period especially since it was the most prosperous time for Muslims and their empire.

The picture I took was with a church mosaic, which i thought was amazing since I had never been in a church before. It was very detailed and looked as if it took a long time to be crafted. The mosaic had a couple depictions of Jesus and I think of his family members.Despite not knowing many of the characters, it was still enjoyable to see and an eye- catching sight.I feel as if my trip to the museum could assist me in my first year at Baruch because I mentioned how I was unwilling to go to museums since they were far away from my house but by going i was experimenting outside my comfort zone.I think I am more willing to go to museums now and would want to check out the many museums New York City has to offer when I have free time such as the semester break. In general I think I will be  more willing to go out of my comfort zone.

Blog Post #1- Student Life

Last Thursday, I went to Baruch’s Muslim Student Association general interest meeting which took place in the NVC  room 12-155. Despite what former Baruch or current Baruch students that were older than me said, such as the MSA is not a good place to learn or is unorganized i still wanted to check it out. To my surprise it was very organized, the President of the club even made a presentation as did the presidents of the other two clubs that were present too;  Women in Islam and the Muslim Business Association. There was even free food! Every person in the room. there had to be around 50 people got a plate of shrimp fried rice, soda, and a serving of fruit.A pamphlet was  given with the staff of each of the clubs, events in the future, and the overall mission to serve the best interest of the Muslim community at Baruch.Personally, I really enjoyed the event especially when the president was telling us that they have an event every year called: An Evening of Speed  Networking. At this event there are numerous representatives from big name companies who are looking for people to potentially hire or just give advice to.Companies such as IBM will have representatives that  speak to each student individually.I will try to attend the most events i can, most likely four out of eight of them because half of them are  on Tuesdays but I have freshman seminar.Overall,  the people were very friendly too and  it was nice to see a couple of other freshman there even though the majority were upperclassmen. Also they mentioned that room NVC 3-227 is the prayer room so that was nice to know too.Even though i already knew this i feel like the majority of Muslims at Baruch are unaware of this so it was good that it was mentioned. This room is a great place to go to, I usually sit here for the most part of my breaks. It is a quiet place and a nice escape from the hustle and bustle of Baruch. The room 3-227 is especially nice to go to on Thursdays, when the music from the club fair can be heard all throughout the college. I look forward to going to more events from the Baruch MSA, and i think it was a great decision to go despite what others may have said.
