Blog 3

David Cohen

The Starr career development center provides selected career services for Baruch students and alumni. I visited the Starr career development center because it seemed the most interesting to pick out of all the other possible blog post options. Upon attending I really didn’t know what to expect. When I walked in and sat down, I was asked several questions such as if I have a decided major, what do I want to do when I graduate, etc. So, I stated what I want to be and they began telling me a lot of options I have to get there. First and foremost, I would need to have a solid resume. A resume is a key aspect when any company is looking to hire. They look for key details, history and experience at given places, and a reason to hire you over the next guy. It is essential to have a well written resume with no errors, grammatically or with accuracy. Second, we spoke about where I can possibly find myself an internship, even as a freshman. An internship is very important because not only can it be put down on a resume, it gives me knowledge and experience working in my given field, along with networking with certain key individuals. Networking is very helpful in the long run as it can provide me with a job. Overall, I learned a lot from the Starr career development center. They teach you exactly what you need to do, while also helping you along the way. This image requires alt text, but the alt text is currently blank. Monologue

Standing on the rocks watching the waves crashing down

How irresponsible they are to just go wherever they want to go

What does it all mean?

What does it stand for?

My thoughts go round and round and I realize that sometimes my thoughts come crashing down just the same

I look at the stars on this clear night

The vast openness of simple nothingness that we call space

A galaxy full of wonders, and I’m a spec of dust

What does it all mean?

What does it stand for?

I turn one way and see the couples walking hand in hand

How they look at each other and share their dreams with their eyes

A simple touch a quiet stare

What does it all mean?

What does it stands for?

I turn the other way and see the dark of the night and wonder

What am I doing here and what will I become?

Have I been a good person who has earned the right to ask for things?

Or am I irresponsible like the waves and think I can go and do whatever I want?

Or can I be the wave that stands tall, carrying life on my shoulders without crashing down?

Can I be so Responsible?

The Hillel

Today I attended the Hillel at Baruch. The Hillel is a Jewish origination/club where any and all Jews from Baruch can go to during the day and meet and talk to other Jews in the school. The Hillel also offers a wide variety of helpful Jewish services that many Jews can find helpful when adjusting to Baruch and college life. First off, The Hillel offers the use of Tehilim, Which Jews use every day to pray. They also offer prayer services where basically, Jews can pray with 10 people (a minyan) which would make the prayer in a way “extra holy”. The Hillel also offers kosher food in an event that someone doesn’t know where else to get however it is relatively easy to find in the city but still definitely an added benefit. It is also nice to be able to speak to other Jews, it’s easier to relate with them as most of us grow up similarly. In all the Hillel is an amazing institution at Baruch, their wide range of services provided are definitely a huge pro for Jews who need to adjust to city and college life. They do their best to make college life as enjoyable and simple as could be.

National Museum of Mathematics

On September 11, 2017, i attended the national museum of Mathematics. After arriving, i began to examine many of the exhibits. The museum itself has two floors, filled with roughly 25 exhibits. The exhibits were cool, attractive, and meaningful,  they are also very interactive for both kids and adults. At first i went to where it shows number lines. In this exhibit it explains in simplicity why number lines are important and how they are used in mathematics. There was also an interactive game that allowed you to run onto a pad with a number line on it, in this game you can run across the number line as numbers appear on a screen, you are given points for how many you can run to in the given time. Another exhibit featured at this museum was the history of Pythagorean theorem. In this exhibit it explained the importance of Pythagorean theorem and how its used in mathematics. The interactive part of the exhibit was that there were three triangles, two of the smaller ones can be filled up with the same blocks as it takes to fill the one larger one. i found this one really interesting because it shows how triangles relate to one another and how important that really is. In all, this museum experience was interesting and meaningful. i learned several things about math while also using my student card to get a discount. (although in the book on page 14 it says i could have gotten in for free, it was 11$ with the discount)
