Starr Career Development Workshop

Two weeks ago I attended a Starr Career development workshop (SCDC) a place that guarantees career services to undergraduate students at Baruch college. This workshop truly changed my perspective on a lot of things. This work shop was a good experience for me as it was the first time I was exposed to aspects of a truly professional work environment. I was provided with a lot of new perspectives about the differences between bussiness types. The two main types of businesses are categorized into small businews and large business. The two types have a lot of differences which are not all limited to size. Large business is subject to more taxes and regulations as they usually have more operations, ventures, and employees. As an employees there are many differences as well in being employed at either a small or a big business. Big businesses usually have more available positing and can offer higher starting salaries. However, it was explained that this is not always the best option. Small businesses employ less but offer a more individualized and personal work experience. Small businesses can pay more attention to workers as well as being able to offer a better chance for promotion and individual recognition. For this reason it is a serious question to wonder whether one should be employed in a small or big business setting. Many factors should be considered as discussed in the workshop. Thanks to my experience at the Starr Career Development Center I was able to learn a lot of information about business types and it definitely helped to prepare me for my future career.

Monologue

We all know the feeling. We get out of bed, shuffle to the shower, scarf down breakfast and get ready for our trip to school. After waiting in the dark for the bus or the train, we get in. Oh look, a seat! This rare sight brings a glimmer of hope to our otherwise dismal morning. You sit down ready to relax and nap on your way to school… and then it hits you. The smell. The stench of body odor, urine, and God knows what else that you realize is currently surrounding you. Next, the sounds. The baby screaming at the top of its lungs, the guy playing his music or video out loud without headphones. You might think something like “why me?” or, “I hate my life”. Now I know better. I know this is actually a good thing.

As someone who has had to witness things like this every day, it really bothered me for a long time. I don’t wear headphones on the train because I think it’s too early for music and I like to get to experience what’s going on around me. Now, who in their right mind wants to experience what’s going on in the train? Well, I do! I say that because getting to be a part of these everyday annoyances has really helped me to realize something. Because that homeless person who smells bad on the train car hasn’t had the opportunity to take a shower in a while. I can take one every day. That screaming baby, when it’s not screaming I’m sure it’s very cute and makes a lot of people very happy. Besides, babies scream and we can’t stop that. That man who is blasting his music probably had an even worse morning than me and he’s just trying to get through it. And then I take a minute to look and see all these different people, the diversity of culture, religion, ethnicity, and it makes me think how maybe this isn’t so bad. Where else in the world can I experience this conglomerate of sounds, smells, and people? I should be grateful for what I have and for what I’m able to be a part of every day. I should be grateful for the experience of taking public transportation.

My Visit To The Writing Center

This incredible photo of me was taken rushing out of the writing center to get to work on time. My trip to the writing center was definitely an interesting one. The first time I had visited I got to learn about the different resources that the school offered and what kinds of tools I could take advantage of. I also learned just how packed the appointments are for the writing center. After going to the writing center for help on my English paper, I was able to learn a lot. I gained a new perspective on my writing, and since it was a personal essay, I realized that I could incorporate aspects that I hadn’t even thought of before. Because of this experience I now know more methods for my writing and how to use them in order to improve my grade. If I hadn’t gone to the writing center I definitely think I would be missing out on a lot. Just to know that there’s a really great place on campus for me to be able to get help for my writing assignments really helps me out. I will probably be more secure in my future assignments now that I know there is a place where I can go for extra help, and it will hopefully make the process of writing papers a lot less stressful for me. I think that after this experience I have seen what the writing center can do for me and it is definitely a resource that I will be using in the future.

Joining My First Club

I think I’ve always been someone that recognizes the value of life and the promise of future. I have always felt that having the chance to live your own life and be happy is a basic human right and that it’s something everyone should be able to enjoy. This is a large contributing factor to why today I signed up to join the “To Write Love On Her Arms” club. The club spreads suicide awareness and promotes prevention and it seems like it’s going to be a good group for me because I will hopefully be able to make a difference in the world regarding this major problem. When I signed up it was a fun atmosphere with people smiling and handing out food and info. It definitely got me excited to be a part of the club!
