My Internship at NFTE- Jaya Hamilton

About three weeks ago I received an email from a organization that I was involved in during my junior year of high school. The Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE)  provides schools and partners across the Tri-State area the opportunity to change young lives through entrepreneurship. In 2016, NFTE launched 3,000+ New York Metro students on their entrepreneurial journey, through in-school and summer programming. I was very privileged to have participated in NFTE and started my own small business. I was surprised when I received an email from the Program Manager about a NFTE Fall internship available for NFTE alumni. I updated my resume with current information about attending Baruch and my intended major and minor. Also, I created a cover letter which included the reasons why I am applying and why I am qualified for the internship. I expressed in my cover letter that I have won first place at the NFTE’s school competition and went on to their regional competition. In addition, I wrote how the interest I have in business and marketing today is because of the spark of creativity and curiousity that NFTE lit in me. A few days after I submitted my resume and cover letter online, I received an email to come in for an interview. I was super excited and a bit nervous because I have not seen the program managers and associates since high school. My interview as a whole was great! I spoke about my unique journey of being exposed to entrepreneurship, something I have never considered or thought was attainable. Also, how I continue to use the skills, such as innovation and professionalism learned from the program in my studies at Baruch and in everyday life. Following the interview I received an email saying that I got the internship position. I was thrilled to begin my first day on November 6th. I received my work email and began completing the tasks on the sheet created by my supervisor. Some of the tasks includes market research, analyzing and updating database, ad completing research projects for the NY Metro team. I am looking forward to continuing my work with NFTE, as I hope to play a role in the education of children across New York. By implementing entrepreneurship and business development in not only their academics, but in their personal journey too.

Here is the internship offer letter from the HR Generalists.

Relax

Exams, Papers, homework, readings, quizzes

Check blackboard, check CUNYfirst, and check your emails

Daily routines can easily turn into cycles

Deadlines will always exist and when you think you completed one task, you secretly know that there is more just waiting to be finished

Just know that these deadlines will always exist

But through it all find time for you

Watch that movie, work out, and find time for your friends because there will come a time when you wished you can go back and change the decisions you made at that moment

Yes, you should be on top of your work, making sure you don’t fall behind

Because there is nothing worse than feeling overwhelmed and flustered

But always know, that you are your number 1 priority

No one understands your strengths and weaknesses like you do

And you don’t have to explain them to everyone

Your daily routines can feel like a cycle

So find that special thing that will help to ease the sluggish and exhausted feeling you may have at the end of the day

Something that will start your day on a better note than the day before

Whatever it is make sure you are maintaining a balance that works for you

We may all say that we are really busy but we always manage to find time for the things we find valuable to us

Blog #2: Tutoring for Upcoming Math Exam

Since the first day of class in August, my professor informed us of the upcoming exam dates. I was happy to hear that he was having tutoring sessions where students from both of his pre-calculus classes would be able to attend. There were several resources already distributed on blackboard to prepare for the exam. My professor shared last year’s first fall and spring exam for the classes to review. The tutoring session was meant to clarify topics for the exam and to go over specific questions from the packet. I was more than excited to attend the tutoring session because I had questions about the earlier chapters. I made sure to have the packets and review sheets printed in advance. Approximately 20 to 25 students attended the tutoring session. My classmates asked similar questions that I was also struggling with and my professor was able to help me better understand the steps. I am hopeful that I will do well on the first math exam on Wednesday. This tutoring session covered topics like profit equation, word problems that involved completing the square, and questions where you have to find if the function is odd, even or neither. I plan on finishing the two practice exams and review sheet before Tuesday. Based on how well the tutoring session was on Thursday I anticipate attending further math tutoring sessions. I am more comfortable answering short answer questions and questions that do not allow calculators. I know that by utilizing the resources available by Baruch I will be able to succeed and familiarize myself with the content.

Women in Business Member Development No.1

On Thursday, September 7th I attended my first Baruch Student Life event. This event was hosted by Baruch’s Women in Business club. This member development was about transitioning to college. Whether you are entering as a freshman from high school, a transfer, or international student, Women in Business had advice for everyone. The board members shared their journeys on how they managed to expand their social network and overcome obstacles along the way. One board member in particular shared how she transferred from City College to Baruch during her sophomore year and that it was quite difficult for her to adjust. However, by joining Women in Business she was able to find her place at Baruch. I personally appreciated how they included hands-on activities with each point made on their powerpoint. Moreover, my favorite part was when the board members of Women in Business shared advice about overcoming stress and dealing with the struggles of starting at a new school year. The presentation helped to ease the end of the summer into the fall semester seamlessly. During the event we created DIY stress relief balls from a balloon and rice filling. We watched a video on how to make stress balls, and why they are very effective in releasing pressure both mentally and physically. Following with the stress relief agenda, we did a 5-minute meditation using an online meditation website that focuses on breathing exercises. The breathing exercises helped to alleviate stress and practice mindfulness. Since completing this exercise I feel that I have a wiser approach for dealing with the

feeling of being overwhelmed by school. I look forward to revisiting this 5-minute meditation website and informing my peers of this helpful tool. As a result of attending this event I have made several friends who are in a similar situation as we transition from high school to college. After attending the first member development I am looking forward to attending more workshops hosted by Women in Business.
