Blog Post #3 Start-up Tech Fair

Among the many opportunities during club hours, there are often fairs around school that allow students to network and meet various business professionals ranging in categories from start-ups to investment banking and beyond. I attended the Start-up tech fair at the Newman Vertical Campus presented by Hillel at Baruch. This event had a panel of entrepreneurs and the panel was led by the President of the club I’m in which is called Tamid. The people on the panel were asked questions that had to do with advice on classes, advice on life, and how to get out there and start setting yourself up for success. Some advice that was given from the Panel members regarding what classes to take were: take philosophy, take organizational classes, as well as learn how to communicate effectively and with confidence. These are invaluable tactics to put yourself on the path to starting your own company or functioning as a productive employee in this type of work environment. After the Panel discussion, students had the opportunity to introduce themselves to the members and ask questions regarding their respective companies and possible internships. Networking is a staple in business so this was a great opportunity to see it in full effect. There were also 5 hidden envelopes with prizes placed under randoms chairs with prizes including gift cards and even an Amazon Alexa. This was a great opportunity and I look forward to attending more fairs and career fairs at Baruch throughout my time here.

Monologue

I started playing basketball in the second grade and I’ve been playing ever since.

My older brother, although we’re not close, was the one who actually taught me how to play

Since then I played all through junior high and was part of a championship winning team

In high school, I got serious and started on my varsity team, but each time I joined a new team, I embarked on a new journey with new brothers

Being on various basketball teams is something I took for granted but definitely enjoyed and the brotherhood that is created through winning and losing with your team is an experience you never forget,

I’ll also never forget my first varsity game, as a freshman, heart pounding as I waited to be called off the bench,

Our team was up by 20 on senior night and it was time for the starters to get some rest,

I subbed in and on my first play received a pass and launched a three straight over the basket, humiliated.

I didn’t let it get me down as I kept playing and hit an easy lay-up shortly after,

and I’ll never forget my last game senior year, playing against the same team we lost to the year before, heart racing as I’m running my legs out as time runs out and the season is about to end.

We lost, but I continued to play in my gap year program in Israel going undefeated in a gap-year program league that ran on Thursday nights. Basketball will always be a significant part of my life.

TAMID @ Baruch

For my second blog post, I decided to choose the category that had the option of joining a club. I chose this category because I recently joined a club here at Baruch. I did not spend much time surveying the different groups I could have been a part of during the given club hours. I was actually referred by a sophomore at Baruch who I met during my first weeks as a student here. He told me I had to join Tamid at Baruch, and followed to explain all the benefits it had to offer. I heeded this guy’s advice and recently was accepted to Tamid at Baruch which I am very excited about. Tamid is a “student-led, apolitical business organization that develops professional skills through hands-on interaction with the Israeli economy,” as per the Tamid at Baruch website. This was incredibly enticing to me, as I spent an entire gap year, this past year, living in Israel and exploring the land while also engaged in theological studies and deep critical thinking. I decided I would apply to the club in order to put more of my free time toward productivity and further education. After completing my application and a phone interview with the club’s President,

I enthusiastically accepted the offer to join the club, once notified of my acceptance. I look forward to learning about both consulting and investing, as well as participating in any networking opportunities that may come forth from Tamid at Baruch.

My SAAC Experience

My name is Aaron Loffman, I’m a Freshman here at Baruch and for my first blog post, I decided to check out the SAAC Tutoring Center to see what the hype was about. I remember from orientation day, our orientation leaders encouraged us to take advantage of this free tutoring service that is lead by Baruch students. So, when I saw it was an option for the Enrichment Workshop assignment, I was further inclined to check it out. I signed up for a 12:00 o’clock tutoring session in Math. I chose that time because It left me an hour and a half of time afterward to write this blog post before I began classes for the day at 2:55pm. When I showed up to the the tutoring center, I signed in using my Baruch Student ID, and was shown to the back of a room with various tables and tutors teaching a range of students in a variety of different subjects. I got paired up with Avni, a wiz in mathematics and a tutor specifically for MTH 1030 and CSTM 0120. I’m in CSTM and I had a few problems I needed help understanding in order to complete my homework due Sep. 12th. Avni was very skilled at teaching the information and coming up with practical examples that helped me understand how to solve the problems. I definitely see myself scheduling future appointments and would recommend this free service to all of my classmates. SAAC is a place I know I will visit in the future during my time at Baruch and it is definitely something to take advantage of.
