FRO Fall 2017 Section DTJ

Athena

I never really liked cats

In fact, I would’ve much rather

 Been friends with bats

Their long evil stares

Their loud screeches

Their spiteful scratches

Are not things that I’d search for

I never imagined owning a cat

Or in other terms,

A cat owning me just like that

Even if I did adopt a feline

It won’t do tricks

It won’t lengthen my lifeline

And it won’t be fun on trips

All in all, I found no amusement with cats

Period.

That was all until a small kitty came

Tiptoeing across my backyard

In no rush and unusually tame

For a stray sweetheart

They named her Rosie

I named her Athena

Rosie was too cheesy

Ebony with a milky stripe

Running from her top

To her bottom

She was born a goddess in my eyes

As usual

Luck and karma joined forces

To teach me a lesson in being humble

Love comes in all forms and doses

Athena’s a perfect example

Museum of Sex

For this week’s blog post I visited the Museum of Sex with my boyfriend. I have to admit that this experience, by far, has been the most interesting museum visit I’ve had in nearly ten years. The various exhibitions definitely opened our eyes to unpopular topics such as sexual history, sexual art as well as the different sexual approaches and habits of animals throughout nature.

After we presented our Groupon and wrapped our wrists with the wristbands, Sebastian and I made our way up to the first exhibit: ObjectXXX. On the second floor, this room was lined with displays of quite interesting artifacts from the Museum of Sex archives. The artifacts consisted of erotic toys, fetishized outfits and vintage forms of protection. The second floor also contained the famous erotic bouncy house which we decided to skip over for time’s sake.

Sebastian and I continued on to walk through the exhibit showing the sexual habits of animals in their natural habitats. We (especially Sebastian) found it appalling that humans aren’t the only creatures who have homosexual and other exotic tendencies. Other creatures of the animal kingdom go about having sex with more than one partner and with the same gender without having to deal with social stigmas and judgement as do many people in our society.

Prior to ending our experience at the museum’s store we swiftly went through multiple art galleries based on feminist artists’ views of sexualization and historical aspects of feminism, showing the audience how we’ve developed our current views and approaches to expressing ourselves as strong, independent, cultured women.

High Spirits for Heritage Month

Hey, everyone!

I hope you guys had as much fun doing your enrichment workshops as I did. I was so busy enjoying the activities for Heritage Month at Student Life, I didn’t even acknowledge that I could be utilizing my experience for a First-Year Seminar blog post until Diana (The wonderful woman next to me in the photo booth snaps I’ve attached) suggested we take a picture for First-Year Seminar during Baruch’s Heritage month event on the 2nd floor!

Honestly, I was unaware that we had a countless number of heritage-based clubs until that Thursday. Diana and I started our cultural adventure with the Mamita’s Batata Cream ices that were being given out by ASEDOM (Association Estudiante Dominicano) and then carried on to another table with some delicious empanadas. As we continued with our mini food tour, Baruch College’s very own radio DJ began blasting some hot jams on the large speakers.

At a little after half past noon, Diana and I made our way to the tenth floor to join UCLA (United Chinese Language Association) for their General Interest Meeting. We were caught by surprise when we walked into a room with over fifty people taking up all the seats and most of the tiled floor. Fortunately, we were welcomed in to get comfortable on the floor and proceed with a funny game of Google Feud. After finishing multiple rounds of Google Feud and Guess the Object in the Picture, we all gathered together for the officers of the club to take a massive group photo and went on to enjoy Chinese food. 🙂
