Baruch Voices

I really enjoyed my time at Baruch Voices and hearing all of the monologues. The monologues presented were excellent and full of creativity and I was kinda disappointed when it was over. This event gave me the opportunity to see how others presented in a big crowd, and gave me hope that maybe one day I will be able to do the same thing. Most of the monologues had a sense of humor around that, which is why they were chosen from their class. Some monologues were also moving and more serious than the rest. My favorite monologue of that day would have to be the guy who was describing the experience of eating Popeye’s. Overall, I had fun learning about others and hearing their creative monologues that day.

First Year Seminar Monolouge

To my knowledge, I feel as if everyone faces some sort of huge challenge that arises in their life. But I didn’t expect my challenge to arise so soon in my life. It’s nothing serious, but it does affect my everyday life. I have the opportunity to go to college with no cost. This is something that I wouldn’t have if my family had decided to stay in Mexico. My parents came to the US when I was one and a half years old, which was 16 years ago. 16 years of calling this country my home and 16 years of not seeing where I am truly from. I would tell you more about my country but I lack the first hand experience of actually being there. The only information I have are the stories that my mom and dad talk about almost everyday. Right now there is tension between immigrants and the president of the US. Even though it’s seen in a negative light, I think this tension is great because of the fact that I can see the numerous support that people are willing to give. In some ways it has the power to bring us together as a country of immigrants. So instead of seeing my status as a challenge, I will be see it as an opportunity.

DREAM Scholar Meet and Greet

Here in this meet and greet, I was able to learn more about my scholarship and meet new people. Some snacks were available at the end but I was much more concerned about the situation we were facing in our community. As most of you may know, President Trump has ended DACA, which stands for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, and with this no longer available to us, it makes things much harder to do. Simple things, like getting a job or continuing our education, are no longer so attainable for us which is why this deferred action means so much to us. During this meeting we were given some information about what we could do to extend our deadlines, and we were shown much support from the rest of the staff there. The presentation itself was very informing and I even got to learn some things about my scholarship that I have previously not known about. I was also lucky enough to meet other Dreamers and know that I am not alone in this situation. I hope I can create a lasting bond with these people and show them my gratitude for what they have done for us, and I will be looking forward to participating in more events concerned around this matter.

LASO General Interest Meeting

I had the pleasure of attending the LASO General Interest Meeting this Thursday. The atmosphere was very welcoming and many people were present for this event as well. They started the event by introducing some members of the group, all while getting support from their friends, and presented to us things we needed to know about the club. They informed us on how to join and what they do as a club. When we got to the middle of the presentation we were given the chance to get up and get some tacos. LASO is a club that I am genuinely interested in because of the diverse environment and, like I said before, the welcoming attitude that they have towards everyone regardless of where they come from. They did mention that this club consist of getting to know people and basically forming a tight knit community within the club, and a tight knit community is something that I think will help me get through these four years of college. There are also many positive bonuses that come from joining LASO, you get to meet knew people and they have multiple opportunities and internships throughout the year. I would love to be apart of this club group and interact with it more as the years go on.
