One event I attended was Baruch Voices. It was a showcase where different members of FRO classes presented the monologue they were required to write. Baruch Voices was a great experience! I really liked this event, because it brought the freshmen class together. Listening to the monologues they wrote was nice, because it also showed me I could relate to people I don’t know as well as showed me things I didn’t know about my friends. It was funny to see the stories people could come up with. I was inspired by the storytelling skills that some people had, so much so that I wrote a story when I got home that night. One of my favorite speakers was Fathia. She talked about her Nigerian culture and it was cool to learn in such a creative way. I also enjoyed Zion’s presentation. He talked about loss of individuality in today’s society and how we compartmentalize people and their ideas. It was really deep. Another monologue I enjoyed was Tiana, from our class. It was just as good as the first time I heard it, and made me empathize. Overall, I’d consider the event a success. The only thing I would recommend is having a portion similar to an open mic sort of thing, where anyone in the audience could also contribute to the show. I would also suggest refreshments because every event is better with food and drinks. In all, the event was a great contribution to my freshman experience and made me more familiar with my fellow classmates of the class of 2017.

I wake to the brightness of my phone screen
And that blaring alarm that disrupts the most heavenly sleep I’ve ever felt
“5:25 WAKE UP NOW OR YOU’LL MISS THE TRAIN”
The day has begun.
But none the less, priorities.
I get ready and prepare to leave the house with one thing on my mind.
Something that I need to accomplish every day or I’ll face unimaginable scrutiny from my peers.
Something so essential to the success of my life both online and off.
Alas, the sunrise
“Cli-click”
The perfect angle for the perfect shot
“Good morning streaks *yellow heart emoji*
Streaks. The most pointless commitment I’ve ever made
Competing with people to see who can get the highest number,
Forcing me to come back day and night,
With no reward for my efforts
other than a fancy new emoji when we hit 100
one hundred days, of snapping back and forth.
Day by day, photo after photo;
We don’t even talk anymore.
From a pleasant conversation, to a green check and an S.
Is it worth it? You tell me.
“Goodnight streaks *purple heart*
Reann’s Trip to MoMA
This was my first time visiting the Museum of Modern Art and it was quite an experience. The museum itself is incredible, 6 floors, and an outdoor lobby. My original plan was to start from the 6th floor and make my way down to the first floor. I did, in fact, start at the 6th floor, and it was the most interesting one to me. The museum had just opened up a new exhibit a few days before, Is Fashion Modern? I started out excited and loved seeing the different pieces through the ages. It was interesting to see how many trends of the past have come back into popularity. As I made my way to the 5th floor, I didn’t exactly know what to expect. I saw many famous pieces I’ve heard of before, and it was pretty cool to see in person, versus a google search image. I sometimes felt like I wasn’t doing it right though. I would simply walk through the museum, and look at the pieces, but I noticed just about everyone else was spending at least a full 60 seconds observing each work of art. I was about halfway through the 3rd floor when the security guards began ushering everyone out of the museum because it was closing. On my way out I discovered a window that overlooked the outdoor lobby, and I must say, at 5:20 the lighting was impeccable for taking photos. In all, it was a great experience, especially because it was free, and I would love to do it again with some friends.
Student Life Heritage Month with Reann
This experience was my first of many at Baruch with a culture other than my own. I attended the Family Feud event under Latinx Heritage Month. I spent my time in the audience watching as the clubs went head to head. It was entertaining, and interesting to see how different other cultures are compared to my own. Other members of the audience got the chance to go up and play alongside the teams, and I have to say, they did pretty well. Some of the clubs that participated were LASO, the Ecuadorian Club, Lexicon, and USG. The event was enjoyable overall, but I do have a few comments about how we can improve events like this. For starters, if you plan to serve food at the event, which is highly recommended by me, a broke college student, please serve the food while it’s hot. I understand that you want to ensure people don’t just come for the food and leave, but a whole hour and a half before we eat? that’s a bit much in my opinion. The pizza, once we got it, was greasy and cold. Another note, if you plan to serve beverages, which is also recommended, please, have ice, or at least let the drinks be cold, just anything but room temperature. Because trust me, cold pizza and hot soda equals at bad trip to the bathroom. In all, this was a great experience and I can’t wait to see where else my life at Baruch takes me.
