STARR Career Workshop

On Tuesday, November 7, I went to the STARR Career Development Center. I signed up to the cover letter workshop.  Where students learned the importance of a cover letter, as well as how to make one. A cover letter is a one page statement that should demonstrate to an employer that you have certain necessary skills and strengths for a specific organization and a preferred position. We learned that in a cover letter that you should make it clear what your intended job will be, the skills you have gained to help you in this job, and that you will be a valuable asset to the organization or company.

Towards the end of the meeting, the advisor split us into many different groups and gave us three sample cover letters. The assignment was to read through all three cover letters and to decide which one would be the best. Every group picked the same cover letter, number 3, because it was the most formal lone. It addressed the employer respectfully and clearly articulated his skills and valuableness in the specific position he was applying for. The 3rd letter also emphasized how appreciative he was that the employer gave up his time and consideration.  The other two letters were horrible in comparison. Both cover letters were extremely unprofessional, not even addressing the employer by his name, and were extremely short. They did not emphasize the assets they would have to the company and one even suggested that the he would schedule the interview.

I learned a lot from this workshop.  I learned what a cover letter is, as well as its importance for applying for jobs. I learned how to format and how to professionally address and employer and how to list my skills that I have learned from previous jobs. The Met – Yoav Toledano

For my blog post, last Monday I decided to visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This museum was built back in the late 1800s. As one of the most visited art museums in the world, the Met consists of more than two million works. Art works from all around the world from modern American paintings to ancient Islamic art have all been collected into this one museum in the heart of New York City.

For my visit to the museum I toured around the European section. I’ve always been interested in European history mainly because of my family’s origin from Spain. However I saw myself more interested in the art works and sculptures from England, France and Italy. While touring around the many rooms filled with beautiful paintings, I stumbled across a long hallway filled with dozens of sculptures. I noticed that many of these sculptures were created in many different type of media. Some were made out of ceramics and some were made of metal. Some of beautiful art works that I saw were the famous Bernini’s bacchanal sculpture, and Gandalfi’s painting of the Execution of Saint John the Baptist. I was fascinated by the progression of the arts as I saw the dates on when the sculptures were formed. Not only was the art work inside the museum extremely inspiring, I was also very inspired the museum exquisite architecture.

My visit to Metropolitan Museum of Art’s was extremely intriguing and I would recommend anyone in the area to visit. However, I would advise to take a friend. Originally, I was planning to take music theory next semester (because it is a requirement), but I think this trip to the met has inspired me to learn more about the history of art from all around the world. So I have now decided that next semester I will be taking art history. This image requires alt text, but the alt text is currently blank. Either add alt text or mark the image as decorative.

Hillel at Baruch- Yoav Toledano

I remember when I decided to go to Baruch my brother told me to immediately find the Hillel. He told me that it was a great place to not only socialize and meet other Jews, but also a great place to find free Kosher food. I didn’t know where the club room was at first during the clubfest on convocation day. However, because I wore a kippah, the president of Hillel noticed me and my friend below and lead us to the Hillel room. Immediately, I was welcomed with open arms. Many people approached me and asked me; where I’m from?, what high school did I go to?, what teachers do you have? They immediately gave me tips on some of my harder teachers, and even offered to give me their old textbooks for free! Now, everytime when I want to talk to someone, I know there will always be someone there to talk to

Our first meeting was in room 4-125 on August 31st. The president and staff introduced themselves to us and introduced us all the clubs that are affiliated with the Hillel at Baruch. For example, the Tamid club,  a club that gives students real business experience through an investment fund. They spoke about this weekend trip to washington where college students get to speak to many influential political speakers. They even served delicious kosher food. The second meeting I went to was on September 7th. The Hillel brought a woman with an incredible story. This woman told us the story of how she survived cancer not once, but twice. She told us of how she balanced out her songwriting career with her chemotherapy. It really got me thinking how much I have taken life for grant
