Freshman Seminar Fall 17 LC04

The MET

There are so many works of art in the MET. All of these works are made by so many different artists. Although some of the works are straightforward, there are also abstract works, which do not have a specific meaning. One artist whose work I came across which was abstract was Rothko. Rothko uses dark colors. From learning about Rothko in an Art History class in high school, I knew that there is a specific distance you are supposed to stand from the painting and a specific amount of time you are supposed to start into the darkness of the painting. Although I tried to do this, it was hard to with all of the guards standing by, keeping a close eye on the visitors.

The section that I loved the most was the section with all of the paintings of the Virgin Mary and Jesus. These religious works were so beautiful and precise. There were so many types of Madonnas and it was interesting to see the evolution of these paintings over time. There were works regarding so many different religions. There was also the area where the works of Islam and the jewelry was on display. The jewelry was so exquisite and so beautiful. There were so many different types of jewelry. It was really so breathtaking. It was amazing to see all the beautiful works and artifacts all together in one place.

It was also a great experience visiting this museum because there were so many works that I have learned about that I got to see in person. Especially taking a course on art history at the moment, it was amazing to see the works up close and personally. It was a new and different experience to see these works personally when I have been learning about them and just seeing projections of them on a screen. Overall, it was a beautiful experience and I plan on going back to visit again soon.

Career Fair on September 15th

The career fair I went to was so big. There were so many different companies in both of the gyms and there were also so many kids that were trying to get a job or an internship. When I was in line waiting to get into the gym, I was listening in to the conversations of those around me. There was a sophomore and a junior behind me talking about what they are trying to accomplish and what they want to do in life. I realized that I have no idea what I want to do and I didn’t know what to do when I got into the fair. Another fellow Baruch student came and stood with us in line and began to tell me that it is a good idea to get started as early as I could.

As I continued to talk to the upperclassmen, I began to understand how competitive the world really is and that I have to get myself together. One of the upperclassmen helped me get my 30 second pitch together and told me to target the smaller companies first and then work with the larger companies. I started off with approaching Uniclo. I felt very comfortable talking to the woman and ended up getting offered a job by her. Then, I tried to talk some other companies and found out that they do not take freshmen. It was an educational experience. I began to search up the different companies from the fair and tried to understand what each one has to offer.

This was a great experience because it helped me get more of a feel of how I am supposed to approach introducing myself and it also helped me want to get more involved. I think that everyone should try to go to a career fair because it is intimidating at first, but it an important experience to have.

Lexicon GIM

From the GIM, I can tell that Lexicon is much different compared to the other clubs here at Baruch. There is a separate team for all aspects of the club, ranging from finance to marketing. This is of high interest for me, since I do not know what field of business I want to join yet. Joining this club would give me more insight into different types of business.

Along with giving me more insight, this club would also help me ease my way into making more friends and really putting myself out there, since this club is present at all the events at Baruch. This would give me an opportunity to meet new people and get more comfortable with the college atmosphere. The current members of the club also seem like great people to surround myself with, since they come across as warmhearted and welcoming. Especially as a freshman, those are the type of positive people I want to network with.

Lexicon is a club that I would be highly interested in joining. Not only would it give me insight into different types of business, but it would also help me become more comfortable with actually pursuing a career in some type of business, since it would give me more experience. In the meeting, the staff also mentioned that you could switch the field that you are in within the club, which is even better.

One thing that really interested me about this specific club is that it is the only real company, or business,  club at Baruch. This was surprising to me because Baruch is mostly a business school. Due to this, I would imagine that there would be more companies or businesses on campus.

Along with having many different teams being involved, Lexicon also goes to all of the events at Baruch. This aspect of the club would help me become more social and comfortable with the Baruch community.
