Freshman Seminar Fall 17 LC04

Career Fair With My Son Semir

Me and my son Semir were anxious and eager to play basketball down in the gymnasium. We really cherish playing basketball in the world renowned Baruch College basketball courts because whenever we do play, it only lasts for about 10 to 15 minutes. Anyways, there was no basketball but their was huge crowds of people everywhere. I was overwhelmed with curiosity  and wanted to find out what was the cause of all this commotion. When I first saw all these important looking people, I got scared. Not scared as in the way that I feared them, but in the sense that I didn’t know how to approach them. But seeing others from my class and grade really gave me confidence in approaching these important figures. I spoke to different representatives and different companies. The more I talked, the more confident I became. I was excited to be able to learn things about different aspects of the fields in finance, accounting, and computer informational systems. If theres one key lesson I took away from this experience, it was that networking is the most vital and essential part in getting out there and preparing yourself for a bright and steady future. I recommend this career fair to all freshmen. Its a great way to expand their knowledge and sharpen their networking skill set. You never know, it help you choose a career path which will define the rest of your life

Morris’s vist to the Met

On November 22nd I visited the Metropolitan Museum that is located in Manhattan, New York. It features thousands of brilliant paintings by many famous artists of the past and present. My trip was influenced by my Art History professor. We have to complete an assignment involving over 30 different types of artworks. Before I went I had a sort of a preconceived notion about the museum. I knew that it was truly and special place, but I thought I’d go and just finish my project. To my surprise, more often than not I would catch myself staring at random paintings that my professor had not assigned to my classmates and I to analyze. This was a great shock to me and I really didn’t think that it was a possibility. My original thought was that I’d just do my project quick and then I’ll go home. It never occurred to me that I would actually be interested in these various artworks.

I feel that I can really learn a significant and meaningful lesson from this voyage. I believe that before a person attempts an activity whether it’s visiting a place or simply talking to someone, they should erase their preconceived notions. This can help create more naturally sound encounters in society. When this can happen I think that we as Americans can truly obtain more peace throughout the country. Who doesn’t want more peace? Only a crazy person.

Morris’s visit to the Career Fair

I attended the Career fair on September 15th which was held in the main gymnasium of Baruch College. This was an extremely formal event that featured multiple important businessmen women that represented their respective companies. I was truly shocked at the turnout of the event. There were much more people that were standing on a giant line just to get in than I ever imagined. This is an amazing sign for the future of the American economy. If so many people were interested in becoming more economically sound then that can only lead to bigger and brighter future. I’m sure that there were many students that weren’t able to attend this event because of classes and that would’ve further increases the population at the event.

Something important that I learned from this event was that businesses truly recognize and appreciate the people that show up at these types gatherings. It shows them that you are committed and passionate about succeeding in your aspirations. When a person is able to do this he or she can really access their full potential and that can only help them become better individuals that can have an immense impact on the future of American society.

I also am appreciative of the kind men and women that took time out of their extremely stressful and busy days to join me and my fellow students at Baruch. This is going to help inspire and enlighten us about their careers and how we should become more involved. I believe that this event really will jump start my willingness to become a more active person in terms of career opportunities. I think that I made some connections that can prove to be extremely valuable when I’m looking for a long-term stable job. I thank Baruch College for this opportunity and encourage other students to attend this type of event in the future.

MET

On November 20th, I went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art after class to start working on the second midterm for our art history class. I’ve been to this museum plenty of times when I took AP Spanish and regular Spanish classes because my teacher wanted us to see certain paintings by Spanish artists. I definitely enjoy going to museums, but honestly I like the architecture more than the art itself. Anyways, the midterm for class was designed to be like a scavenger hunt, but the way she did it was a little random. Normally it would make sense to plan it all so that you go to one room and then the next one was near by. The way this one was set up, it was like going from one end of the museum to the next, then back to the other end. It’s definitely not hard to find your way around, especially with the map. I think it was just less time efficient than I would’ve preferred.

Moran, Alejandro- Starr Career Development Center

Today I went to the Starr Career Development Center and wow do they have a lot of helpful things to offer. They are a great tool for learning about workshops, internships, jobs, mentoring, and information sessions. Apart from those helpful resources, they also offer mock interviews and assistance with one’s resume, which are two things that are really useful when trying to land a job or internship.

I have not tried any of their services yet but I will in the near future after I update my resume. I definitely feel more at ease and confident knowing that the SCDC offers these service to all Baruch students who seek help with career services. One can either make an appointment or visit their office during walk-in hours. I recommend giving them a visit if your having trouble with any career related issues. They are friendly people and will be glad to help you.

Museum of Jewish Heritage

On October 26, our art history class went to the Museum of Jewish Heritage – A Living Memorial of the Holocaust. I didn’t know thats the museum we were going to until we got there. But, I have a lot of friends that have been there, not just for school, but for their own personal experience. We walked through parts of the museum instead of going through the whole tour because we wouldn’t have had enough time. There was a part of the tour that we passed but didn’t spend much time on that made me very emotional, which was the child’s stripped pajamas along with the pictures of the victims and it showed us a bit of each person’s history. To physically see the faces of the victims is actually insane because learning about the Holocaust in a regular classroom definitely does not have the same effect as going to this museum. I definitely would go back in the future to go through the whole tour from start to finish.

Attending an interest meeting for S&P

In an attempt to learn more about business, I attended an interest meeting for the corporation S&P Global Inc. The meeting, which required that I wear business attire, may very well have been my first step into the world of business. I was allowed to speak with representatives who work for their company about their jobs, and it was much different from what I expected. The primary focus of their experiences was not on the skills they practiced in classes but on the skills they acquired through communicating with people. This was a surprise to me, as I did not expect that charisma would be just as valuable a tool in the job market as a college degree.

The representatives, who were in their early 20s, first explained what their jobs actually are. Working for S&P, their task at hand is to “assess the ability and willingness of a company to pay back obligations in full and on time.” They gather information from management teams so that that company’s ratings are as accurate as possible.

While having the financial capability to complete their work is definitely a requirement, the representatives explained that your personality is just as important in gaining and keeping a job. Most of the people applying for the job have mathematical and analytical prowess, but the representatives explained that it is your own personality that sets you apart from those you are competing with. In interviews, you have to show parts of yourself that aren’t on your resume and sell yourself. Your enthusiasm for the job may very well be what earns you that position. When asked for career advice, the representatives said to be open and proactive and to seek mentorship.

Overall, I learned a lot from attending this interest meeting. I found myself very attentive to what the representatives were saying and became more motivated to enter the job market with high grades and an open personality. One of the great things about Baruch is that it has interest meeting from different companies all the time which truly allows its students to expand their networks and learn from experienced people. This is definitely one of the college’s aspects that I will find myself taking advantage of more in the future.

Sabha Says…

My heart was racing, my head was pounding, and I could just feel the sensation of stress and anxiety flowing through my veins. I knew I had to do something which was efficient and ultimately beneficial to my academic studies. This is when I decided that I had to take initiative. I attended the extra help workshop held by Professor Mohammed Sabha for Pre-Calculus. With the first test coming up for the course, I just didn’t know what to expect. During the workshop, all of my questions were answered. We went over functions, graphing equations and depreciation- topics we had learned during the sections of the course material. I even found out that there were sample tests and review sheets online which could help me prepare better for the exam. I would recommend going to these extra help sessions to anyone who seeks help to better understand the material. The professor will help you get a better grasp on the subject in an environment where everyone feels comfortable and welcome.

Leadership Weekend Experience

Attending Leadership Weekend may have been the best way to start off my college experience at Baruch. This trip to Camp Speers in the Poconos was at first of interest to me because it would put me in an environment that I enjoyed much more than the big city in which our campus resides. By the end of the weekend, I realized that what I was truly taking away from this trip wasn’t the environment, but the connections I made with other people and things I learned about myself. During this trip, all students were encouraged to step outside of their comfort zones and do things they wouldn’t normally do. This encouragement strengthened my leadership skills as well as my teamwork skills.

Before leaving for the trip, students were required to take a test that determines your top five strengths. Throughout the weekend, we not only learned more about our own strengths, but about the strengths of others as well. While working with the handbook, we learned about all of the strengths by directly talking about them. But while participating in teamwork building activities, we could see the strengths of others shining through their actions.

While realizing all of these things, I also had a ton of fun participating in the activities and meeting new people from Baruch. The overall atmosphere of the weekend was positive and friendly, making it much easier to try all the new things that Leadership Weekend made available to me.

By meeting all of these people, I learned a lot about many of the clubs that Baruch has to offer and am much more interested in these clubs than I was before. Attending Leadership Weekend was definitely the best way to begin my journey as a Bearcat because I was able to quickly become more comfortable with my school and am now able to take advantage of the many opportunities that Baruch has to offer.

Noeshare, Syed – TSO (Student Life)

I was taking a nice stroll on the 3rd floor with some friends when I saw something at the corner of my eye. It wasn’t a bird, a plane, nor was it Superman, but it was the TSO. An organization that helps transfer students assimilate into the Baruch student population, but more so with those students that share similar interests and similar goals for their future academic achievements.

In addition, the TSO helps their own club members explore and venture throughout the other clubs Baruch College has to offer. This helps with communicating with others and getting past the phobia of opening up and speaking to others. In conclusion, the TSO has much to offer, but clearly emphasizes one significantly vital concept. That concept is networking. Networking will allow each and every one of us to have connections throughout the world, possibly resulting in an abundance of accomplishments and success in our endeavors.
