Freshman Seminar Fall 17 LC04

Semir goes to the Career Fair!

I heard about this career fair after finding out that I couldn’t play basketball because of it.  After already walking downstairs, I figured I might as well check out what all this fuss was about.  I came from a job interview, so I was already dressed professionally, and was good to go.  The event took place in both gyms and had a lot of students and companies.  At first, I was a bit nervous and intimidated because I didn’t know how to start a conversation with all these wealthy businessmen.  After a while, I felt more comfortable, and I was able to talk to different people from different organizations.  After speaking to many companies, some of them offered job applications.  The reason behind me visiting this fair, however, wasn’t to find job, but to just expand my knowledge and help myself understand what I want to do when I’m older.  I went home and researched some of the companies that I saw at the fair, and I learned a lot about what they do and more.  After all this, I realized, even though you can make a lot working for different companies, I want to follow after a Jay Z quote from “Diamonds in Sierra Leone” in which he said, “Im not a businessman, Im a business man”.  I would recommend this fair to everyone, especially incoming freshman who don’t know exactly what they want to do when they’re older.  It really helped me find out a lot of things I didnt know, and although at first it may be intimidating, you will get more comfortable, and learn a lot of things, and maybe even figure out what you want to do when you’re older.

Semir goes to MOMA!

Today I went to the Museum of Modern Art in NYC!  I normally would not go to a museum for fun, however, when I got my schedule and saw I had to take art history, I had to see what all this fuss was about.  Coming from the Bronx, the only kind of art I really knew about was music, especially form artists like A Boogie and Cardi B.  When I first stepped in to the museum, the piece of art that really caught my eye was “Starry Night” painted by Vincent Van Gogh.  This was a very interesting piece for me to see because I always heard about it in previous art classes from high school, and to actually see it is a cool thing to do.  I am not a huge fan of art, but when my friends told me they were going, I figured I had nothing to lose, and maybe I would even enjoy it, and look into art a little more.  That never ended up happening, but it did help me appreciate art, and made me a little bit more interested in my art history.  There was this one exhibit where they had a movie about space and air crafts, and that was interesting because I never expected a museum to have those kind of visuals, and it was something different from just looking at paintings on a wall.  The museum was also very empty, and there was lots of space left between each work of art, and that really helped emphasize the art works, and it wasn’t overcrowded with people which really allowed me enjoy everything for the little time I had.  I would really suggest checking out any museums you can if you are ever in the city because there really are cool things that you may discover!

Semir’s Day at the BAP Event!!

It is Thursday, September 14th, and I decided to go to the Beta Alpha Psi event.  For all of you that don’t know what BAP is, it is a club at Baruch that helps students that are in the finance and accounting fields to build a network, and in the future to hopefully get a job in their field.  I heard about this group from many people, and heard it would really help me with my interview skills, connections and more.  I went to a general interest meeting last week and heard everything I wanted to hear about the group, but this event was made so we can meet some of the club leaders and just have fun.  I attended this meeting with a friend, and really didn’t know anyone else, but after the meeting was finished, I knew a good amount of new people.  At the event, there were many ice breakers and fun things to do, along with free food!  One of the activities were to pick a skittle out of a bag, and based on the color of the skittle, we had to say something about ourselves whether it was an embarrassing story or the weirdest food we ever ate.  Another activity we had to do was to cover an egg with three different materials, and try to make sure it didn’t crack.  They gave us materials like bubble wrap, cotton, and more.  Ultimately nobody made a good enough cushion for the egg because every single egg cracked, but they gave the win to the peoples egg that cracked the least, and sadly, it wasn’t my group that won..  The last activity was to write a fact about yourself, and crumble it and throw it.  You were supposed to go pick one up, and find the person that wrote yours, but mine said something like, “Sometimes, I lie in bed and think about the one that got away”.  I never found the person, and to this day I still wonder what they were talking about.  This event was a great experience, and it helped me meet new people, which is sometimes very hard to do in college.
