On October 19th, I decided to go to the Careers in Start-Up workshop. When I walked into the room, there were already plenty of people sitting down as well as lined up to sign in. I was waiting in line with Emily, curious of how my experience will be like. After signing in, we sat all the way in the back, waiting for the speakers to start. The twin speakers Vadim and Sergei Revzin introduced themselves and started engaging us in what we know about start ups. As they were talking, they were also showing a lengthy slideshow to divert our attention to what they were talking about. Their experiences and life stories of their own start up and struggles was pretty interesting. It gave me an idea of a possible choice for my future. Overall, I think that building a company from scratch is hard but the effort builds up and can eventually bring me somewhere. They also talked about jobs and how to obtain one as well as foundation skills of jobs. They discussed that networking is helpful and being prepared to interviews is beneficial. I have learned a lot from the workshop and may take part in opportunities.

Student Life Blog (UCLA)
For my student life blog I decided to join a club. As I walked towards the room, I heard a lot of voices. I’ve always been shy and antisocial so going to a general interest meeting was a huge step for me. I was interested in this meeting which was for UCLA (United Chinese Language Association). As an asian, I guess I thought i could meet people I had commonalities with. When i entered, I saw a room full of people and one of the members of the club immediately welcomed me.
As i took a seat, everyone was getting to know each other. The girl to my left made an effort to start a conversation and from there, I felt like i already made a new friend. She was a senior named Tiffany and studied accounting, which is what i intend on majoring in as well. The members of UCLA were starting to introduce themselves and their positions in the club. They seemed really nice and outgoing.
After the introductions, the members explained what the main goal of the club was and what they were striving for. They also explained all the events that are going to be happening in the future. Later on, we were playing ice breakers games like google feud and zoom it. I think it was a great way to ease any nervousness and bond with everyone. The room was split into two groups, both being very competitive.
At last, the games were coming to an end and the members brought in food. Everyone in the room lined up and got a plate. There were many choices of food and drinks which made my time there very enjoyable. I really had a great experience and hope to join more of UCLA’s events in the future.
Blog
For my academic blog, I decided to attend the exhibitions at the American Museum of Natural History. I always appreciated museums because of the vast knowledge and abundance of things I’m able to see and learn about. It was a wonderful experience and I enjoyed everything the museum offered. The moment I walked in through the doors of the museum, I was intrigued by all the different halls and cultures of the world. The different types of halls I went to were the Hall of African Mammals, North American Mammals, Big Bang Theater, Birds, Primates, etc.
My favorite part of the museum was watching the Big Bang presentation at the Hayden Big Bang Theater. We had the chance to look into a concave screen to view a 3D dynamic flight of the virtual universe. It was extremely interesting and I learned about the different galaxies, stars, and planets. I also learned that dark energy is a mysterious force counter to gravity that dominates the modern universe.
Another part of the museum I liked was the fossil hall of dinosaurs and mammals. There, I got to see various types of vertebrate animals that are existing as well as extinct. My favorite exhibit of the dinosaurs was the Tyrannosaurus rex, or the T-rex. I learned that the T-rex had a walking speed of 3-6 miles per hour and that their arms were weak. All advanced tyrannosaurs had only two fingers on each hand, which I found interesting. In addition, I learned that it was possible that these dinosaurs may have hunted in packs based on their track ways and footprints.
Overall, the American Museum of Natural History was really fun and entertaining. I liked all the exhibits and enjoyed learning about the different types of animals and people in our history. I would definitely recommend this museum to anyone if they are fond of history.
