Freshman Seminar Fall 17 LC06

Career in risk management workshop

I went to The Spotlight Serves: Careers in Risk Management workshop with some of my friends after school on October tenth, 2017. We knew it will have a workshop after class and it was hold by the STARR. We did not register, and we went directly which almost have no seats for us. But we were lucky and at around 5pm, the workshop began.

It was a workshop form with three presentations. The speakers were very seasoned, they made the speeches very detail and full of their own experiences, which included the reasons why they were succeed today. Most of the students who attended the workshop were Juniors, Seniors, and graduate students. I remembered the speaker asked the grade of us, we were ready to raise our hands when he asked if he had any freshmen. However he did not ask. For me, the presentations were a little bit hard for understanding, because they used a lot of academic words, which i never heard before. The problems was even  I took a lot of notes, and also did some researches but it was still difficult. All the  students payed a lot of attention listening the speakers and taking plenty of notes. It was a new experience for me also, because I never went to an activity as a workshop. It was hard, but interesting even though it was not an activity for fun. I hope after I learn more and attend more workshops, because it can give me more experience for future career and learn more skills.

Moon cake festival at CSSA

October fourth which was the August fifteenth in Chinese lunar calendar. That day is a Chinese traditional festival— moon cake festival. There is a lovely story about the moon cake festival, which we also called the mid fall festival. This is one of the legends of ancient China. Long long ago( I know right, every legend starts with this three words. ), there was a beautiful woman named chang’e, and she got an elixir. She did not tell her husband and ate the elixir, and as a punishment she had to go to the moon, which separated from her husband yi. Her husband made moo cakes in memeory of her.

This year CSSA offered the free moon cakes, food, and drinks for the members. I went here with my best two friends in Baruch College. We ate food, played games called werewolves of miller’s hollow, and drew a lottery or raffle, which I got a number of seven. But unfortunately, we had class in the afternoon we had to leave early. We told the president of CSSA, she is very nice and totally understand us. That day was my first mooncake festival during my College life, it was an unforgettable experience and I think I will remember it forever. I enjoyed the student life in Baruch College I am looking forward to enjoy more after-school life here, and participate more to fullfill my college life.

Academic Blog: American Folk Art Museum

Last Friday the September 8th, I went to American Flok Art Museum. It is a free museum for all. In the front of the entrance there are a lot of brochures and by reading them I have learned that American Flok Art Museum is the premier institution devoted to the creative expressions of self-taught artists, past, and present- artists of diverse backgrounds, origins, inspirations, and goals. And since 1961, the museum has been shaping the understanding of art by the self-taught fro the revolutionary era to today. By showcasing the ongoing creativity of individuals whose singular talents have been refined through experience rather than formal artistic training, the museum consideres the historical, social, and artistic context of American visual culture. The museum’s collection holds more than 8,000 artworks dating from the eighteen century to the present, including early American portraits, painted furniture, and twenty-first centuries; the art of the American south, by African American masters such as bill Traylor, Lonnie Holley, Ronald Lockett, and other.

As I went through the museum, there is a little shop on the left side of the entrance, very small but full of creative hand-made art such as books, postcards, and some fabrics. In the middle of the exhibition hall of the museum, there is a painting of a lady making the quilts. Because during this season the museum is  exhibiting the “quilts”. This paint is called “Strippy Quilt”. And there is a story on the wall which says this complex quilt was made by a soldier who was not a professional tailor. It shocked me, because the quilts seems to be made very professional.

I never learned American tranditional culture like this before. It is new and fresh for me. I will learn more about past American art in the future. It was a wonderful experience for me.
