Freshman Seminar Fall 17 LC06

Career Post

On October 25th, I attended the Finance 101 career workshop.  I decided to attend the workshop because I changed my mind to major in finance instead of accounting. However, still somewhat undecided.  I wanted to know more about the career path as a finance major student. During the workshop, they talked about what you can be as a finance major. For example, a banker which what I intend to be or a stockbroker as I have some interest in stocks. Having strong communications to develop and to maintain relationships between customers is crucial in the field of finance. However, I am still in that process of developing fluent public speaking skills. I hope next semester’s communication class will be beneficial toward it. The workshop was helpful in many ways. Beside providing significant information about the career as a finance major, there were also tips on interviews, resume writings such as cover letter and some insights from professionals finance major field workers. Furthermore, since most finance jobs are office oriented, the instructor also discuss the layouts of different sections of offices. For instance, there are sections for technology, information organization, record keeping and filing, just to name a few. I knew some of these office layouts as I had a lot of experience as office workers. I worked as office assistant for a long time and still are. After the workshop, it was beneficial as it introduced me the environment of a finance worker and cleared some misunderstandings.

Arden/Everywhere

On Sunday October 8th, I went to watch the play “Arden/Everywhere: The As You Like It Project”. This play was directed by Jessica Bauman who corporate  the the idea of modern refugees, immigrants with the play Shakespeare play, “As You Like It. This was the first time I actually watch a live performance theater art. I decided to attend a play for this blog is because a mandatory written assignment for my theater class. So, I killed two birds with one stone. This first time theater experience was somewhat interesting and significant. It changed my perspective of live performing arts. I walked into the Baruch Art Performing Center(B3) with the attitude of just want the play to end as soon as possible and go home because it starts at 7pm and end at 10pm. I just find a random seat near the middle front for a better view and waited for the play to begin. I wasn’t too into the at the beginning because there wasn’t much thrilling actions. That’s one of the reason I don’t like plays; too much talking. Surprisingly, it somehow attract my attention. The way the director portray the daughter who ran away to escape death, struggling in a absolute unfamiliar world caught my sympathy. I can feel the emotion the actors tried to convey and I was into the character because the actors were also from various backgrounds as well the tone. Without spoiling the play since many people in our class needs to watch it for the same assignment, this play changed my perspective of theater art rather than sitting in front of a screen watching a movie or show, I can witness the actions, apply my own meaning to the actions, and imagine myself to be part of the play. This is the power of live performing art.

Academic Blog: Metropolitan Museum of Art

Out of all the choices I have, I’ve decided to visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art near central park. Together with my friend, we visited this museum full of relics of the history. From Egyptian Art to Medieval armors and arms, modern American paintings to European sculptures, Asian art to Japanese bamboo art, each sections brings out a distinctive feeling of the period.

Specifically, my favorite among all the masterpieces was the “Seated Four-Armed Vinshnu”. It is originated in India, Pandya Dynasty, during the early 9th century. This four armed statue has its own unique significance. His role in Hinduism is to preserved the world and is portrayed as a war god that descend to the earth to battle the evil. With each arm holding a different weapon; his raised left hand, he held as shankha(conch battle trumpet), his lower left hand rests, his upper right hand held a chakra, and his lower right hand would be in a gesture that exorcise the evil. It portrays it with such great strength that makes the people feel safe; nothing is better than peace. Most importantly, it is my favorite because Vinshnu is said to be sitting on a lion throne even it can not be seen fully. However, I can imagine how mighty it could be. Other honorable mention was the Armor for Man and Horse. This colossal army caught my eyes once I entered the Arms and Armor section. I can already felt the triumph of riding on armed horse. At last, with one regret, not being able to find the sculpture of Arthur Pendragon(King Arthur) and Excalibur. Regrets aside, it was a fun day spending quality time with my new college friend Dianyuan and bring our friendship together :D.
