Freshman Seminar Fall 17 LC09

Baruch Fall 2017 Club Fair

On Thursday, September 14th, I went to t Baruch Fall 2017 Club Fair with my friend Tiffany Cheung. I decided to go to the Club Fair because I felt like I should get more involved on campus as well as making my future semester plans. Since we both have a long break, I thought I might as well used this opportunity to find a club to join for next semester. It was also a nice way to use my gap hours to be productive. So I dragged my friend with me to the fair.

We went to the Club Fair to find out what clubs are offered, hoping that something will interest us. Tiffany had no idea what she liked, which was not surprising. I knew what I liked to do for clubs, since I have been in a lot of clubs in high school. However, college clubs are very different. I didn’t have to interview to join a club in high school nor did they have that many options. So in the end I was also indecisive.

We took a quick run around the club tables to see what was there. I saw a mock trial club that was hosted by Joe, Dan, and Sadia, who was handing out the flyers. What caught my interest was the free food. I suggested Tiffany to join the Women in Business club whereas I went to the Lexicon club. I was involved in my high school’s yearbook club, so I was thinking of helping Baruch. So I went over there, signed up on the mailing list and took a sample of their book. Then I saw Baruch’s Hack club, which was for coding and I also signed up for that as well. Overall, it was a nice experience to see what Baruch had to offer and what I can join during next semester.

Trip to the MET

On October 13th, I went on my first college trip with my global history class to the Metropolitan Museum of Art for that extra credit.

I didn’t mind because I needed that extra credit in case I bomb my midterm, and it’s been a year since I went to a museum so overall it was a win-win situation-or so I thought.

We got to see little sculptures that represented ancient times like the ancient slaughter houses. I took it upon myself to make jokes about them to make my friends laugh and for myself to speed things up. I remember why I didn’t like going to Museums. They were overall dull. I wasn’t enthusiastic on learning about Ancient Egypt out of curiosity. I was there to listen to her tour and to take pictures so I can use the materials for my essay. We did get to see the famous William the ancient hippopotamus. We also ended up exploring other exhibits such as ancient China, Mesopotamia and Japan. Despite all the things I saw, the highlight of that day was the argument between Kevin and Michelle about Haitian mangoes versus DR mangoes.

The sad part came when I had to write my essay on Ancient Egypt-or so I thought. It turned out, we had to write an essay, but we couldn’t do it on Ancient Egypt. Why? Because we went to the trip. Basically, we went to the trip to have a tour  around Ancient Egypt exhibit, which we took pictures and recordings of for essay, just to find out we can’t write an essay on Ancient Egypt because we took a trip around the exhibit.

We all found out the last minute too, so I had to close ten of my tabs and wrote a whole new essay on some Ishtar Gate.

Baruch Loft Party

Baruch Loft Party. Thursday night. Right before a Friday. Hosted by USG. Lit or nah?

When my friends and I first heard about the loft party, we all assumed how it was going to be just another forced, cheesy ice breaker; essentially a drag. However, as you can see from this picture , we had a lot of fun. I only went to take a picture for a FRO blog because that was the one of the incentives that made me go. The other was food.

Me, Tiffany, Maria, and Yina didn’t even bother to go out to eat just so we can keep our wallet full (debatable) by eating the food provided by the party. We assumed it was just going to be pizza, but no. BURGERS AND FRIES.

My stomach’s impatience grew the longer we waited on the line. I could feel my stomach twist and turn more and more after every additional second. It could sense the burgers that sat on the tables beyond the two guards.

Once we were allowed to go inside, we rushed and followed the scented trail that lead to the tables. We quickly grabbed a burger, some fries, and a drink, and went into the room. As soon as we stepped in, we saw giant chest pieces and Jenga Tower wood blocks, along with other games that I don’t know the name of. They don’t matter tho, I didn’t go to play games, I went to EAT and TURN UP.

The burgers and fries tasted amazing, but I was immediately hungry again after I started dancing for three hours straight. Of course, I had to take a bathroom break because someone bumped into me and ruined my white sweater with my own cup of Hawaiian fruit punch. Adding to the misfortune, I didn’t have a shirt or tank top underneath, so I couldn’t change. Turning it inside out didn’t work. I also denied my friend Deana’s offer of her dad’s long sleeve. I had to improvise by wearing it backwards and wearing my book bag to hide the stains on the back.

I should have just wore my stained sweater without the book bag, because for the next remaining hours, I had to dance with my book bag on. It was still worth it though because it was fun to dance with my friends and other new freshmen.

We jammed to whatever song the DJ put on, swaying our hips, arms, our entire bodies as we moved closer to the center. The dance floor had multiple circles of people dancing. In the center of my circle, a girl named Destiny threw out some amazing moves. She could do all types of dancing from robotic to break dancing. She wasn’t the only one that was amazing. I remember seeing and laughing at a few dancers that went around dancing with giant chest pieces in their hands.

By the end of the party, I’ve made some new friends, and got closer to the ones that I made from my FRO class. I had an amazing time, evident by how I looked like I took a shower. My curled and puffy hair became straight. It was worth it.
