To fulfill my career blog post, I decided to go to STARR Career Center. At first I had no idea where to go, but my friend Mike was able to guide me. I wanted to go to STARR for a two main reasons. One was to look for any potential internship opportunities as I have a lot of spare time on my hands. The other reason was to get help organizing my resume while looking at example cover letters. When I walked in I was greeted by a man at the front desk, I told him was I was looking for and he was able to assist me. He gave me a guide that included resume formats. It included some specifics that I had no idea were beneficial in creating my resume. In terms of finding out more about internships, I was told to look on the STARR website frequently for opportunities. That night I spent some time readjusting the format of my resume to meet the requirements on the given guide. It took me about 1 hour, but it was time well spent because my resume was noticeably well organized. The next day I went online to look for some internships, however I was met with a frequent problem. Most internships required students in their sophomore year. This was kind of a bummer since I was becoming interested in working, however it wasn’t all too bad because I actually found some business related internships that I was able to currently apply for. For some of the applications I just had to link my resume that was saved on my computer. I still didn’t have a cover letter however, which some of the applications had to option for. I plan on going back to the STARR center to familiarize myself with the cover letter. Overall, I got what I wanted out of the career center and I will carry techniques learned into future applications.

On October 4th, 2017, I went to the SACC at Baruch to get extra help for my upcoming pre-calc final, and to fulfill my academic blog post. At first I didn’t know how to sign up for a tutor slot, but my friend Dan was able to help me. I scheduled it for the 10 am slot online. The next day, I walked in to school, but I had no idea where to go so I asked the security guard and he directed me to my destination. When I got to the center, I had to sign in and give them my ID to make sure it was me. My tutor’s name was Selena and we were working on a practice midterm exam that was given to me from my professor who isn’t the greatest at explaining mathematical concepts. She was very helpful throughout the tutor experience and she explained the problems very thoroughly and effectively. I ended up staying for the full slot, and then my friend Jeremy came and I thought it would be good to go over everything again to make sure I could apply the new information that I was just taught. I had to go back to the front desk and let them know that I was going to be staying for another hour long session, and they were ok with it so I stayed for the next full slot and went through everythingagain. Prior to the tutor, I didn’t really know how to do much of the problems on the practice exam. Overall, I had a good time working with my tutor, and I will for sure go to the SACC again in the future for any exams that I have. I ended up doing pretty well on the midterm so I guess it actually helped.

During club hours I went to the Baruch basketball gym on the 3rd floor of the basement. I didn’t have to sign in anywhere, I just walked in. This fulfilled my student life requirement. I wanted to go to this because basketball is one of my favorite hobbies and I was looking forward to meeting new friends who had the same interest as I do. I didn’t know many people at the time, so I couldn’t ask anyone if they wanted to come with me. I played basketball throughout high school, and I play in parks pretty often. All it takes is a flashy pass to spark a friendship. I entered the gym and there were only two half courts available. I was really confused because there was another gym right across, and two kids were shooting around, but they said the gym was closed. There were also a lot of people waiting for next game, so I approached a couple of dudes and asked if they had next, they said yes and I could join in with them. There were people from all grades playing against each other. My first game I played well, however, we ended up losing. I was guarding a junior, who was really quick, so it was kind of difficult to keep up with him, but I did my best. Like I said before, all it takes is a flashy pass to spark a friendship and that’s exactly what happened. I made a behind the back pass to a wide open teammate, and he finished the lay-up. He said nice pass and dapped me up. For the rest of the game we had trouble guarding a 6’6 senior. While on the sideline, I was talking to some of my teammates, and I found out we had some stuff in common. We were both from Long Island, and we lived relatively near each other. We ended up becoming friends and decided we would play against the next team together. I had to wait 40 minutes until the next game because there were so many people waiting. I wish I was able to shoot around while waiting instead of having to just sit around. During the second game, we played much better because we had got one game under the belt, and we were much more comfortable with each other and our playing styles. Me and my friend scored 10 of our 16 total points and we ended up winning the game. Although, during this time I was able to engage in casual conversation amongst those who were waiting as well. Overall, I enjoyed my experience going to the Baruch basketball courts, as I was able to enjoy my hobby and meet new people at the same time. I definitely plan on going to more open gym opportunities in the future, and I’ll probably ask the friend I made to come with me. I ended up subscribing to a list where Baruch will tell me every time the gym is available for kids to use.
