On October 26th, I attended a workshop called Dining Etiquette.Basically, it teaches us the “Table Manner” in serious dining situation such as the interview when you try to get a job from your employer. I actually enjoyed being there and left with a lot of knowledge in hand. I attended this workshop because dining interview is a really common way when people pursue a job. So, it will somehow helpful to me when I am in that situation in the future. In this workshop, we basically learned what to do and what not to do in this format of interviews. First of all, we entered into the same room we had lunch on orientation day. It was kind of like a buffet we can pick whatever we want and go back to our seat. Something different is that most of us were dressed up and kept quiet to stimulate that “interview”. While we eating, the guest speaker starts off her speech by teaching us the different ways to place forks, knives and napkins. She also mentioned that use spoon outwardly when you having soup, don’t order any alcohol even though your employer asks so, ladies can’t take off their blazers but males can choose either take off or not however need to stick to one option, fold napkin into proper size and place it on your laps before eating, and do not order foods that are limited in the restaurant and really expensive. Also, when you accidentally eat something you shouldn’t and want to split it out, do not split it into napkins but on your fork and quietly place it on one side of your plate without gathering attention from others. All of these are important because they are the test your employer gives you. They want you to show your manner that’s the thing you represent yourself and probably his company. So please be careful in these kind of situation because it’s not like a dinner you go out with your friends and family on Saturday night. Overall,I found it’s really helpful because it reminds me that I actually should have the habit to eat formally from now on.

Today, me and my friends went to the Museum of Modern Art. As an interest, I started leaning painting since 7, so I really enjoy these art things. There are a lot of famous paintings and creative artifacts which really made me stand there for a while because I was trying to get the point of why the creator made these. And also there was an area that we can actually make something by ourself which I think is really fun because we can immediately create a structure or draw a abstract painting by that moment’s feeling. And sometimes that is how art is created.
I really enjoyed this “small trip”,not only got closer with my new college friends but also experienced a fantastic day. We might don’t understand what’s the point for them to made these artworks or even they look weird and meaningless, however, for the creator, they are just trying to find a way to express themselves. And this is really works on me, too. Sometimes I have no idea about what should I draw so I start with simple lines, random patterns, and whatever the color I see first, but finally, I always get a pretty satisfied work because by the process of not knowing, I gradually imagine how these lines and colors can form a complete picture. And I feel relax when I do things I like such as watercolor and sketching. Because I really need the time to give myself a break after a long busy day.

Me and my friends joined the accounting club last Thursday because we were trying to find out if the club will really help us. Although we are all freshmen and seems there are a long way to go, but time actually flashes really fast, so we want to quickly get closer to our future career. At the beginning we played a ice breaker game and I thought all the president, leaders, and other staff members are really kind and helpful. After the game, the president showed us a PowerPoint basically introduced how accounting club works and what we need to do. They said there will be companies coming for speech and giving advices, we will have our own mocking interview, and we can work together to modify our resume. And I think all of these are really helpful so I decided to become a member of the accounting club.
I started this internship two weeks ago because I want to learn at least some basic knowledges about my career like what accountants usually do and how they communicate with their customers. My guidance is really nice and helpful. She gives me a lot of advices and teaches me step by step. As for today, she tough me how to use QuickBook to record, calculate, and manage databases and taxation for companies. To examine how much I learned and make sure I really get it, my guidance gave me a company’s materials and let me finish regulating them. Unexpectedly, I finished pretty good without mistakes. Although the work is kind of boring and made me tired, I felt pretty satisfied and confident after that. So, maybe I can really see accountant as my future career.
