Freshman Seminar Fall 17 LC10

Workshop: Let’s Get Starrted Week 2

I went to the second workshop of Let’s Get Starrted. Since I didn’t go to the first meeting, I thought that I would be lost during this workshop but the assistant director of the Starr Career Development center made everything very easy to understand for those they went for the first time and the information was very helpful, especially for those that may have trouble figuring out what they want to major in. We went over the Strong Interest Inventory Profile that the students have taken during the first workshop, but since I didn’t go to the first workshop, I got a sample profile instead. She even gave handouts that would help us figure out what kind of jobs occupations would suit us based on our personality, skills, and interests. For example, if your general occupational theme is conventional that means that you prefer to work with data and carry out detailed instructions or plan. Based on the general occupational theme, a possible occupation could be an accountant, actuary, financial manager, etc. The profile is kind of like the Focus 2 Assessment except it seems to be more detailed and the workshop itself was very helpful to me as I am unsure of what I want to major in anymore and might consider changing my intended major.

MoMA PS1

Since there was a blog post that was due soon, my friend and I went to MoMA PS1 on Friday October 6th, 2017. We chose MoMA PS1 for two reasons. One was because it was free if we showed them our NYC ID card and the second reason was because it was closer to go to MoMA PS1 then going all the way to Manhattan. When we got there, we were told that we were not allowed to freely roam/ walk around by ourselves. We had to attend a tour and follow the tour guide because it was still in it’s installation period. While we were touring the place, the tour guide gave us a lot of interesting facts about MoMA PS1, facts such as why there’s a PS1 after the name, the history to the building, as well as some intriguing art pieces that were in the museum. MoMA PS1 used to be a elementary school, hence the PS1 after MoMA and the boys and girls were separated. They entered through different doors and there were 2 stairs that went up/down to the same place but was separated by wired fence. That was cool because it was mind-blowing to know that the 2 stairs cases lead to the same place but it was facing opposite directions. We were also shown the boiler room and was told that for a couple of years, there was no heat in the building since the boiler was built and installed a few years after the building was built. As we walked around, I found that artwork can be very odd. One artwork was a red colored in square on a gray granite wall. I didn’t get why it was considered art because it was basically a hold in the wall. The tour guide explained how the square was colored in; the square was colored by the artist leaving instructions for other artists on how to color it in and finish his work. The instructions came with crayons and the artist coloring in the square would press the crayon to the wall until it was crushed on the wall leaving a mark. There were other artwork that we saw such as the open hole in the ceiling of a room. Inside the room, it was warm and it felt nice to be able to feel the fresh air and the suns rays from up top even though we are inside the building. After the installations are complete, I would like to go back and see what is other pieces are available and hopefully understand why such small and odd pieces of artwork are worth a lot more than it seems.

The Chit Chat Club

On Thursday, I went to the Chit Chat club with my friends that are shown above. They were the ones that told me about the chit chat club. I was saying sure, why not? I should go take a look and also go for the sake of the blog. Another reason I went was because my friends told me that there would be free Chinese food.

I wasn’t sure what this club was, I thought that the students would just be chit chatting just like what the name of the club says, but that wasn’t the case. As we were eating our food, Connor Mullan wanted us to participate in a game that was a combination of telephone and charades. The first person knows the career and has to act it out to the next person, he/she then has to copy and/or know what the person before them try to act out. The last person has to say career that was being acted out. When I was watching, the game seemed fun and exciting, but when it was finally my turn, it actually turned out pretty embarrassing. Not only was I standing in the middle of the room where everyone can see me, but the career that I had to act out was a professional dancer!!! The person behind me went all out in dancing, and when I saw him act it out I was thinking to myself “OH NO WAY?! I HAVE TO DANCE LIKE THAT TO THE NEXT PERSON?!” As if standing in the middle of the classroom wasn’t enough for me to crawl into a hole.

After the game, the information about the club was presented to us. The Chit-Chat club doesn’t require a membership, meaning that anyone can join, even those that are already in another club. The purpose of this club is to connect students, meet new people and allow them to express their ideas and opinions freely. Thursday is “speak your mind” day which basically allows everyone to say anything they want. There are also different events that will occur each month, but I don’t remember what events there were because I have a really bad memory.

In the end, this club is pretty fun. Everyone is so open mined, easy going and friendly which makes the aura in the club comfortable. I look forward to the future upcoming events and meeting new people that can potentially be my friend.
