Freshman Seminar Fall 17 LC10

Career

Last Monday, I went a guest lecture by, Christina Rawlins from Center for Marketing intelligence. We learned a lot from the guest lecture because she taught us general information about what marketing is and how it is done. Although most people in the class did not know much about the topic since the purpose of the class was to learn some general information about marketing. I found the lecture pretty entertaining and helpful because at first I did not know much about marketing, but after, I have a general knowledge about how the marketing industry operates. It opened my mind because I didn’t know there was more to marketing than just advertisement. I was exposed to the how market researching was and it was a lot more complex than I thought it would be. It required using databases which reminded me of what I did in library class. I could not imagine myself searching databases in the future just to learn about how to effectively market a company. I did enjoy the videos that she showed us though. These advertisements that she showed us were not the typical ads, they had strategies behind them and appealed to certain groups of people. I think this guest lecture will help me throughout college because I learned about the how marketing is a crucial part in business and without it, not many business, if any, would be able to grow or even realize their weaknesses. Overall, I thought this lecture widened my view in the business world.

Academic Workshop

On October 12, I went to the Writing Center Workshop. The general topic was Using Sources Strategically. We learned about the different types of sources and broken up into specific types of sources and identifying them. This workshop was helpful because I am not very good at writing and I am also not used to using sources a lot. I do want to learn to write better and potentially make my writing and papers for school better. So the first step would probably to learn to use sources because in High School, I rarely used a variety of sources. Before attending the workshop, I only thought that there were mainly two sources, primary and secondary. But then we learned that there are more types of sources such as Background, Exhibit, Argument, and Method. Each have their own specific uses and effect. Prior to the workshop, generally, I would say that I used sources to give background information rather than for anything else. Now that I learned that sources can do other things like backup my own argument. This is going to help me get through my first year at college because I have two papers which will require me to look for resources online and to incorporate into my paper. And since I never practiced and learned to use the sources I gathered well, this workshop definitely made it clearer as to how I can use specific sources effectively. Also, this will help me overall throughout college because I will probably be writing papers frequently. Overall, this workshop gave me a lot of general knowledge about the different types of sources and how it is used.

Club

I went to the eSports club. It was kind of late to go, but I still went. At first, I did not know what to do at school. I did not know many people coming to the school since I came from a relatively small High School. However, when I finally came to Baruch College, I was surprised about how many students attend. I am also not interested in many things. But since I did play a lot of games prior to attending college, I did have a passion for it. I played quite a bit of games and probably more than the average person would. So when I first went to the club meeting, I did not expect many people to be there. Like honestly, who would join an eSports club, I thought to myself. Turns out, a fair bit of people did. I met some people who played the same games as me and they also played other popular games. At first, I didn’t talk to them about games. But, as I learned about other people in the club, we started talking more. Other people who were there started talking about video games that I’ve played as well. I learned that in college, there were other students who played video games like I did. We talked about aspects of the game and what we did when we played. Not only did we talk about the games that I’ve played, but also talked about other games that I have not played before. This helped me get through the first few weeks of college because I didn’t know many people. I also was not interested in many things. It gave me a place to express my interest. Also since coming to college, I’ve gotten a lot more homework compared to high school. The meeting allowed for me to calm down and talk about something enjoy rather than the classes that I take, which are not as interesting.
