Freshman Seminar Fall 17 LC10

America Needs You (ANY) Fellowship Workshop – Vicky Lin

Today, I went to the workshop for America needs you believing that it was a good opportunity for me to learn about their available scholarships, internships, and the service they provide. As I entered the room, I was surprised that I was the first one, so I thought people might start showing up sooner or later. As time proceeds to pass, it was clear that there were not many people who were interested in this workshop, but the students who were running the workshop decided that they would wait a little longer.

When we started, they introduced themselves and told us that they were both from the ANY fellowship program which is extremely helpful for students who are first generation college students as well as those who are financially qualified for this program. As they continued, they moved onto how students in this program can receive one on one assistance from a professional of a certain field; they would guide us and prepare us for interviews, future jobs, resumes, communication skills, etc. It really struck me how this program will be beneficial to my career goal. I was mostly interested in the internships that they offered for their members. Later on, they described what was expected of the students who were going to be selected in the program; meaning they had to attend weekly workshops as well as prepare to follow through for more work that are aimed at preparing them for the real life experiences after college.

I personally would love to sign up for this program, but if the student lives in New York, they have to attend a CUNY in the following semester. It is a great opportunity for any students here to expand their network as well as gain real life experiences and consultation. I believe that it would prove to be of great aid when students may struggle with interviews, finding internships, and preparing to enter society. I am interested in the professionals of various fields that offer their help, it seemed like it would be an eye-opening experience to communicate with these people.

Museum at FIT – Vicky Lin

We went to the Museum at FIT as a group. Our journey started from Baruch College and we took a walk to the museum. As we arrived, the building seems relatively huge, so I thought that there will be a lot to see. We took pamphlets and entered the showcase. However, after we explored the museum, we found the exhibit rather small. There was a really cool dress that resembled a splash of liquid. At first I thought it was just an display of something people deemed as artistic, but when I came to realize that it was a dress, my views changed. It is unique and creative; the way the dress is structured and how it the idea of a splash was put into clothing. The material was shiny, so I assume that it is made of plastic.

The exhibits at the museum really demonstrated how much time and thought the designers put into those clothing. Their ideas were not limited, but were also inspired by the world around us.

Overall, the experience was nice, it was nice to spend some time with my fellow peers. We had a great trip and spent some time together for lunch.

UCLA

I was recommended to check out this club by my friend. I did not initially plan on joining this club, but then I was convinced by one of the club members. As I entered, I was astonished by the number of people there. IT was packed and I was feeling uncomfortable with the crowd. The room was packed: the chairs were filled and there were even numerous students standing by the walls and sitting on the floor. The club members gave me a brief explanation of the purpose of the club; that was when I decided that I wanted to be part of the UCLA so I signed up by giving my basic information along with my email.

The most tempting part of her explanation were the activities that the club was involved in. The following Tuesday, September 12, she notified me that there was going to be an activity where we would be making paper lanterns. Even though it sounds exciting, I doubt I will be able to have the time to participate due to my schedule. It is a shame that I would not be able to go, but there will always be next time for the activities.

Furthermore, she explained that the club was not as demanding as it sounded, and the events that they were planning seems to be quite interesting. For instance, she described that the UCLA will be holding a sports day like event where we would be participating along with other clubs. This seemed to be a fun and interactive activity in which I look forward to!

As I was conversing with the club members, they wore a bright welcoming smile and their tone was of excitement. It made me feel like they are having fun and that joining the club would also provide experiences in which I would enjoy.
