Freshman Seminar Fall 17 LC12

Career Workshop: Interview Prep

I wanted to learn more about how to have a successful job interview. Thus, I decided to attend a career workshop about interviews presented by representatives from Target. I went to this workshop last month, so I can’t remember much of the specifics. The three representatives were very comfortable presenting useful tips on prepping for an interview. They emphasis the need to have scenarios that will answer questions. In other words, you would answer questions by describing a situation including what you did to solve the situation and what you learned in the end. This will help the interviewer to know more about you and your skills. They also emphasis the need to practice before coming to the real interview. In addition, they mentioned to make the interview as quick as possible so the interviewer won’t have room for more questions which may be a bad sign as it might mean that your answers were not clear and concise. Furthermore, they discussed that it is important to ask questions and to send them a thank you note afterwards. Besides discussing the interview prep, they also talked a lot about the Target Corporation. I never knew it was such a complex company until this workshop. Many attending the workshop were actually prepping themselves to interview for Target. Hence, this workshop had gave me a new perspective in Target Corporation in addition to prepping for a job interview. I still have not experience my first interview, so I do not know much about the process. However, this workshop certainly helped me understand more on what to do during an interview.

Academic: Study Abroad Info Session

I was always interested in studying abroad in college, but I never had the chance to know more about the process. Thus, I decided to attend an info session to learn more about its funding. Initially, I did not know about this session until a friend introduced it to me. I went with two friends and we were a bit late. It was on the thirteenth floor and we got a little lost. It had already started by the time we went inside and was handed with lots of handouts of different scholarship programs. In the session, I learned a lot about the various opportunities to fund studying abroad. There were programs that are specific to certain countries and general programs such as the Gilman scholarship. Although there are many opportunities, it is difficult and competitive to get accepted. The application process is long and time-consuming. The instructor or adviser speaking in the session gave some helpful tips in getting accepted by emphasizing the need to write great essays to impress them. She also explained what certain programs are looking for in their candidates which I thought was very useful. Overall, the session was fun and informative to be in.

This info session had made me realized the competitiveness of these scholarships. It somewhat made me nervous for going abroad as it is an expensive and intensive experience. However, the session had also excited me to go abroad and learn more about the cultures. Although I’am not planning to study abroad this year, I became more interested in studying abroad in my future years in college.

P.S.: I forgot to take a picture in the info session, but I hope having these handouts will serve as proof that I went there.

Student Life in Baruch College

For the past two Thursdays, I went to a club GIM called UCLA (United Chinese Language Association). I was instantly surprised by the amount of people who went to this GIM as seen in the pictures above. I never expect a club meeting to have so many people. A lot of people had to sit on the floor or stand for the entire time including me. The club meeting started by the introduction of the club and its board members. While introducing the meaning and objective of the club, I start to realize that this club isn’t just where Asians gather together. It’s about spreading and learning about the Chinese culture regardless of ethnicity. It made me more interested in the club.

Then we started to play several games and people started to get very excited. Due to the large amount of people, it was difficult to have everyone involved, but it was still very fun to watch the participants competing each other. The board members were also very energetic and nice to talk to. The food arrived and the people got even more excited. Unfortunately, I didn’t get the food because there was absolutely way too much people waiting in line. As a matter of fact, the picture above shows how I’m trying to get through all those people to get food. In all, the club GIM certainly caught my interest to continue attending future meetings.
