Freshman Seminar Fall 17 LC12

Vark Questionnaire

Today i took the Vark questionnaire, the idea behind it is that you answer some questions and they tell you about your learning preferences and at the end it gives you recommendations for the best way to learn.

In the beginning I answered questions about my learning preferences, how I like to learn certain stuff, both physical and intellectual. The questions gave real world scenarios and how I would prefer to learn in those scenarios.

At the end it gave me a rating one what type of learning I prefer, my highest rating was in aural which was 7. It also gave me suggestions on how to tailor my learning experience to get the most out of it.

I think this was a good experience, it gave me insight into myself that I didn’t know before and I can use this in my academic life to help get the most out of my education.

Leadership Weekend

Recently I learned a very important lesson, that leadership is a highway, it is not something that can be achieved overnight but being a leader means putting in time and effort into your personal growth. I learned this during the 35th annual leadership weekend, which completely changed my outlook on being a leader. I had always thought being a leader meant to separate yourself from the crowd and do more than just to follow. Although this might be true to a certain extent, a more important thing to know as a leader is that following is itself a type of leadership, because without followers there would be no leaders, so to become a leader one must first become a follower.

During this weekend not only did I learn the important traits of a leader but I had the privilege of meeting some amazing people. Within minutes of the bus ride to camp speers YMCA, where the leadership weekend took place, I met an amazing group of people and throughout the road trip there was a party at the back of the bus. When we reached camp I saw one of the most spectacular things, a night sky shinning full of stars, it was a spectacle that left all of speechless and amazed. One of the most exciting thing that I got to do was explore the woods during the night, it was exciting and scary at the same time but the company of some amazing people made it all worthwhile.

From learning about leadership to discovering the woods at night, this was truly an amazing experience and one of the most memorable event that I have been a part of at Baruch.

First GIM

Standing outside the Newman Vertical Campus building, trying to decide with a couple of friends which club or society to join, we made a group decision to go to a business fraternity named Beta Alpha Psi. Initially I was skeptical about joining a fraternity, because I always thought that all fraternities are social organizations and there was not much I could learn from them. With in a couple minutes into the general introductory meeting I realized how wrong I was.

The rush chairs started off by showing us a video which introduced all the members of Beta Alpha Psi and the transitioned into telling us about their three basic principle namely; professionalism, community service and brotherhood. They further told us about their experiences and how Beta Alpha Psi not only helped them do good professionally, but how each of them had build a bond with one another and created a family of their own.

Listening about the fraternity and individual experiences of people in it, made me realize, their was more to fraternities than I had initially thought and more importantly, the importance of being a part of a community that not only supports you but also helps you in achieving your dreams and aspirations, with which you come into college. Even though I am not sure in which club I would best fit, I can say with certainty that Beta Alpha Psi can help me achieve my dreams and cheer me on as I go out into the world to achieve them.
