Internship Interview

A few days ago a mentor from high school contacted me with an internship opportunity and told me to go for the interview. The position wasn’t much, but it was a chance to get a feel of a professional environment and see how things work. I had previous experience with interviews, so I knew some questions they would ask, like my strengths and weaknesses. My mentor helped go over my resume and modified some parts to make it better. The interview wasn’t too long, maybe 10 minutes or so. The interviewer was more interested in seeing how I reacted to situations in an office, like if there was a conflict between my coworkers and I. Also, they wanted to know more about my other interests or hobbies. This helped them see more of who I am as a person than on paper. Then, it was more of the basic questions like what my goals are and what I can bring to the office. They also gave me some curve balls with questions like what would I do if my weakness hindered the team’s success. Overall, the experience of going to an internship interview in an actual professional setting was much different than just at a part-time job. Since my mentor knew the person who interviewed me, they were able to give me some feedback on my resume as well. I felt this interview helped me figure out what areas I could improve during future interviews for a job or another internship opportunity.

Monologue

Today’s society defines a model student
Straight A’s, social, and prudent
But, this isn’t always the case
Sometimes we leave class with a confused face
Yet, we still strive for that A-plus
And always try to catch that morning bus
With no sleep, we walk into class
Only with the hope and prayer that we’ll pass
With the professor talking for two hours straight with no end
The only thing I see is my unconscious friend
Everyone just wants to jump forward to graduate
But, if we can even get through a class is a big debate
One teacher tells us attendance isn’t a grade
But, if we don’t come, they throw shade
Then they tell us it’s for our sake
But it only causes a bigger headache
The powerpoint looks nice, but what do I learn?
Hopefully, it’ll be enough to help me get the degree I need to earn
The end result is to have a good career
But, this is already looks like it’s going to be a tough year
I hope the extra coffee will help me stay awake
Until we are saved with a long holiday break

MoMA: Lydia L.

Last week, I got the chance to go uptown and visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I’ve visited the museum a couple of times, but I wanted to see one exhibit in particular this time. I went up and got to the exhibit, “Items: Is Fashion Modern?” I found it interesting because it showed the various changes in fashion throughout society. Especially when compared to clothing and fashion choices today, everything has become very different. There was one piece that was just a plain, white t-shirt. It was so simple, but still a staple in many people’s closets today. Everyone owns a white shirt, jeans, and for women, even maybe a black dress. Some pieces of clothing are timeless and this exhibit showed that clearly. However, compared to today, fashion has become both simple and complex. Now, everyone has different opinions in their fashion choices and freedom to wear what they want. While we still wear these white shirts and jeans, we also incorporated different ideas to make them modern. But, at the same time people still like to keep it simple and classic. Even today, I have at least one white t-shirt because it goes with pretty much anything. This visit to MoMA helped me remember how much people have changed and stayed the same at times, like fashion.

VSA GIM# 2

I wasn’t sure about which club I wanted to go to at first. But at convocation, I saw a lot of different clubs. One of the first people I was talked to was the president from VSA. I went with a friend that had recently gone to their GIM# 1. When we sat down, a couple of people from the board came up to us and they were very friendly. All of the members were extremely outgoing and tried to get to know new people. The meeting was mostly talking about what VSA was and the different events. I found the events to be really interesting and something I would want to go to. One of the events was Pho night. I thought it would be really fun since that’s where everyone can talk outside a school setting. The games were interesting as well. One game was “find your family.” We were given an animal and had to find others with the same animal by using the noise made by that animal. It was a fun idea, even though it just turned out to be a lot of random noises. The rest of the games were mostly getting to know everyone. It was nice to see there were people that were sophomores and juniors as well. I felt overall, VSA was a club that I would be serious in pursuing because of the great atmosphere and people.
