Freshman Seminar Fall 17 LC16

Blog Post#3 – Career Workshop

Last Wednesday, my friends and I went to the ” Small Talk- It’s a Big Deal” Career Workshop. In this workshop, we learned about how to tell if a person is interested in talking to you. Two aspects that we looked at were body language and facial expressions. If the person is trying to make eye contact with you, has a straight back, and is smiling, then the person is geniunely showing an interest in having a conversation with you.

We also learned about how a person should keep a conversation alive with a person that they just met. For in, you can create small talk by finding something in common with the person you just met such as the weather. However, it is important to stray away from three sensitive topics: sex, religion, and politics. These three topics are very personal and should not be brought up in small talks. On the other hand, there are times where politics can be brought up, but it would have to be in a very limited manner. For instance, you can converse about how tense a general election may be. I really enjoyed this career workshop because I am able to use what I learned last Wednesday in job interviews and in future events where I will meet new people.

Freshman Seminar- Sahil Jaisinghani’s Academic Blog Post

Last Tuesday, Simon and I visited the Museum of Public Relations which is located on the fifth floor of the William and Anita Newman Library. During this visit, I learned about the advancement of technology and prominent figures that made a substantial amount of change in our modern society.

I saw many inventions such as a typewriter, a camcorder, a telephone with a spinning dial and a camera. It was interesting to see the difference in the technology between then and now. Now we have Iphones that can take pictures, videos, and make phone calls. It is also capable of storing documents through apps like google docs app. To see such a major advancement in our technology shows how far we have come in such a short period of time. In addition, it makes me wonder what we will achieve in the next decade or two.

I also learned about Dan Edelman who played an important role in advocating women’s right in smoking publicly. There was even a walk where both male and female supporters walked down the streets smoking as a small form of retaliation against gender inequality. During that time there were many controversies such as woman suffrage and equal pay for women. Thus showing how there was a lot of social reform during that time.

I enjoyed touring the Museum of Public Relations and would recommend it to anyone who has an interest in seeing how far we have come technologically and how Dan Edelman had a major role in forming our modern society.

SASA Interest Meeting- FRO

Hey guys!

This Thursday, September 7th, 2017, I went to SASA’s interest meeting. I planned on going to the meeting because I wanted to join a club where I would be able to find people with similar backgrounds. I am glad that I went to SASA’s meeting as I was able to meet new people. It was an amazing turn out! We had about twenty to thirty people attend the meeting and kicked off the year playing the ice breaker “Move your Booty”. The ice breaker activity was a lot of fun; people were laughing as everyone tried to avoid being the last one standing in the middle of the circle. I really liked this ice breaker because you were able to learn peoples’ names quick. I made a couple of friends there as everyone broke away from the ice breaker to “chit chaat” and enjoy the refreshing aloo chaat. Everyone in SASA is amicable and very welcoming. I encourage other freshmen to join SASA!
