Freshman Seminar Fall 17 LC16

I was busy everyday except Saturday. Even on Saturday I was quite busy, so i had to pick something and do it on a timely matter. Picking a museum was quite easy. My friend (or my photographer) and I were racing against time so we had to choose the closest museum in Brooklyn which was obviously Brooklyn Museum. Located near Prospect park, Brooklyn museum was featuring many deep topics such as the black movements and suffrage (which I end up not visiting). What intrigued me was the things they have on display. Things that are quire ordinary in the modern world we live in. One example of this was the chair that was on display. I was baffled upon the fact that a chair that looked like it came from Ikea was on public display. Nothing seemed special about and nothing significant was featured. What was special about the chair was the fact that it was so ordinary. Besides the chairs that i saw in the museum, I was able to see miniature models of houses and environments. These models was so realistic that I had to take a Snapchat about it and show everyone “my magnificent new home”. Overall, my experience in the museum was well spent because i was able to update my profile picture after 108 weeks of the same old picture of me and my Asian Youtubers. I also made sure I took a picture of proof that I went to the museum.

Last week, I attended the Alpha Kappa Psi general interest meeting with the intent of meeting new people, while slowly creating new connections. This fraternity piqued my interest because my friend’s cousin was a part of it; she said that her cousin made great connections and made some new buddies, and that he really recommended the Alpha Kappa Psi. The meeting consisted of general information, a Q&A session, and a short, but fun, icebreaker. The fraternity really stands out because its members boasted of its wide arsenal of alumni, connections, etc. This stood out to me, as my mother always tells me: Make connections and you’ll be connected. I reel e like eggs. With around 150 members in Baruch and approximately 240,000 members around the world, Alpha Kappa Psi seems like a great fit for me. I think that, by attending this club and becoming a crucial member, I’ll be able to learn the skills I need to become a successful Bearcat!!!!

This past Thursday I had the opportunity to attend the first meeting of Alpha Kappa Psi, a business frat in Baruch. The meeting began with a brief introduction followed by refreshments which included McDonalds! I was very interested in this business frat and what it had to offer, especially throughout my freshman year. They offered assistance with resume building, and networking/interviews. Due to the size of the frat, it is very easy to find the support you need to get key internships in specific areas of study. Overall the frat seemed very welcoming and supportive like a close-knit family. Furthermore, the leaders went on to explain how the alumni are very successful business individuals working in the top business/accounting companies in the country. This allows us to communicate, as Baruch students, with specific alumni in particular fields of business. Another aspect of the frat that I liked was their devotion to giving back to the community. Towards the end of the meeting they made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches that were to be given out to the poor. I will definitely come back for a follow up meeting.

On September 7th i went to a general interest meeting held by Alpha Kappa Psi, who are one of the professional fraternities in Baruch. The general interest included a video made by the club members. They all gave us a little information on what the club is about and what we should expect if we wish to commit our time and effort to this organization. They said that they placed a high emphasis on philanthropy, and that’s when they proceeded to tell us that the activity for that club would be to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for a homeless shelter. It was quite an interesting experience. With about 50-60 people working together in making these sandwhiches, most of whom did not know one another. This experience has helped me in my first year at Baruch because it gave me an insight to what fraternities really are like in Baruch. Most colleges have those crazy party fraternities, but the ones here are contributing something positive to the community. This also helped me understand what club hours are typically like in baruch. The whole place was bouncing with music and it was overall a positive attitude. Baruch seems like a friendlier place. This image requires alt text, but the alt text is currently blank. During the club fair on Thursday I went to the FES interest meeting. During the meeting I was first given an introduction by the executive board and returning members of the club. I was also given an in depth explanation of the different sections of the club. There is the investment section where those who are set on being in the investment field. There are more sections in the club. There is the membership program where students, usually freshmen and sophomores, go to if they do not know what part of business/ finance they want to be in. After all the introductions the students in the meeting got into groups of ten and attempted to make the largest tower using ten sticks of pasta, a marshmallow and lastly teamwork. Although my team and I did not make the tallest tower we did collaborate and made the tallest tower we could.

Last week, I attended the general interest meeting for Alpha Kappa Psi, which is a professional co-ed business fraternity. I was interested in this fraternity because my cousin, who graduated from college last year, was a part of this fraternity in another chapter. During this meeting, members of the fraternity explained most of the general aspects of the club such as their resources, networking, alumni, etc. The motto of their fraternity is to stand out, but don’t stand alone; they have a wide range of social activities such as their game nights, which take place on Wednesdays. They can help you with your resumes and networking–with about 150 members in Baruch and about 240,000 members worldwide, there are many opportunities available to find internships, accumulate new skills, and gain new connections. The large alumni network of the fraternity is a great way to encounter new experiences in order to help people be better prepared for the competitive business world.

On Thursday last week, I attended the general interest meeting for Alpha Kappa Psi, a coed business fraternity that will introduce you to new people and get internships. At the meeting, they explained that they had many resources that would help us make the best out of college. They would help out with resumes, networking, interviews, so that we could get any internship/job that we want. They also had free food and drinks at the meeting. There are 150 members at Baruch and 240,000 worldwide. My cousin (at Baruch) and brother (at Binghamton University) are also part of this fraternity, and they recommended that I join this fraternity because they both said that you make a lot of connections/friends and that the frat helps you succeed in your business career, which can definitely be seen by the amount of people that they have in the fraternity worldwide. This fraternity has many alumni in the “Big Four Accounting Firms (Deloitte, PwC, E&Y, and KPMG),” which aids in getting jobs because they’ll look to hire more people from Baruch. I will definitely attend the next meeting that they have coming up.

On September 7th, I attended the first KCCC club meeting. In the first meeting, the Korea Campus Crusade for Christ shared their history, explained their visions, and what they do. KCCC was birthed after Joon Gon Kim met the founder of CCC, Bill Bright. Eventually the movement was spread towards the United States as a college campus ministry. The organization’s goal is to raise up followers of Jesus Christ everywhere.

KCCC hosts college campus meetings during school club hours, events where different local churches can gather, and sports events where different college campuses compete against other KCCC clubs. In the first meeting, there was a time of worship where we sang two contemporary Christian songs which was followed by a short sermon about fellowship. Food was served afterwards which allowed me to converse with the existing club members. They offered advice on Baruch and we exchanged contact information. Overall, I enjoyed the club meeting and the people there. In the first meeting, I was welcomed by many people and I’ve already connected with a handful of people. It wasn’t as uncomfortable as I anticipated it to be, so I think I might come back.

I went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art last Saturday! I went with my sister as you can see in the photo. There were countless photos to be seen but I remember the gigantic photo of George Washington crossing the Delaware. In history class last Thursday, we had just talked about this famous picture, so it was quite a coincidence that I would end up seeing the real thing 2 days later. I also saw a famous artwork named “The Death of Socrates”, which was also very relatable to my Baruch studies as I am taking philosophy, and we are currently learning about him. All the photos had captions which helped me understand the photos in context. The exhibit in the picture is the Tiffany Window, which was made in the early 1900’s. It depicts a autumn landscape and I really like its visual appeal. While attending a museum does not necessarily assist me in my first semester here at Baruch besides helping me pass Freshmen Seminar, I am now aware of the advantages I have with a CUNY ID card, such as being able to visit and explore museums for free. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is just one of the many museums I can attend for free as I saw a big list of all the museums that I can go to for free such as the Bronx Zoo and etc. I spent roughly the entire day at the museum and I am sure we still were not able to view everything. This glass artwork and other photographs that were related to my classes I am taking at Baruch were the art pieces I enjoyed the most.

On 9/7/17, I attended an event hosted by the United Chinese Language Association located in North Vertical Campus in room 10-175. When I walked in to the room, it was filled with an amicable atmosphere and the people there welcomed us like we were their guests. Something I noticed was that there was a lot of Asians in a small room.  The members of the organization gave us a brief summary about their identity and their purpose. Their purpose was to introduce or have people around Baruch campus familiarized with Chinese culture and they do this in different ways like talking with new members, getting involved in activities, etc. After that, we played 2 games together. It wasn’t so much about what the games were, but how the games brought people together. Although I didn’t speak at all, there was a lot of communication and teamwork that I could see during those games. It was nice to see how involved everyone was and it definitely shows that UCLA knows how to make new members comfortable. After that, food was served and everyone was having a good time. Overall, this UCLA meeting was a satisfying one and I would recommend others to go join. The good thing is all races are welcome and you are guaranteed to have a great time.
