Blog Post #3, Career

For my 3rd and last blog post I decided to take the career workshop offered at the Starr Career Development Center called, “Mastering the Job Interview- Focuses on the second interview or the site interview”. Going into the workshop I thought that it would be pretty pointless with tips that would not help me. On the other hand, I gained much more out of this workshop than I had expected! First of all, the environment of the workshop was amazing. The environment included a group of people of about 25-30 people. All the people were of like mind as myself and wanted to improve their skills. The workshop taught me a bunch of tips and tricks that I could actually use in an interview. The first tip that I learned during the workshop about job interviews was about walking into the room. I learned that right before you walk into a room for a job interview you should stop and pause at the door. Once you have stopped at the door, you think about your exact purpose in the interview and focus. You stand up straighter and become prepared to speak in a loud, clear, and most importantly, a confident voice. Second, I learned about answering questions. I learned that it is very important to pause and really think about your answer before you speak. When you think about what you speak about before you say it, your mind has time to think of a truly unique and purposeful response that will incite interest from the interview to you. Also, as a secondary interview question, I learned that there are also countless others who have the second interview as well and that this interview counts just as much as the other one, if not more in that you must impress the interview most. We learned about trying to relate the interviewer’s life to my own life by talking after the interview well. Most importantly, we learned that one’s expression is the most important part of the interview as a whole. The way one sits, dresses, and speaks gives the interviewer the best representation of the type of person you are. You must sit straight with a flat back and your shoulders back. Also you must dress to impress; do not wear the same clothes that everyone else in the room wears, yet keep the dress code proper. Finally, speak loudly, clearly, and confidently. I really enjoyed the workshop and hope to attend more in the future. This image requires alt text, but the alt text is currently blank. Either add alt text or mark the image as decorative.

Blog Post #2

Last week I was introduced to the Writing Center. Located on the 8th floor, the center provides free help with editing and improving your writing. When I got there, I was greeted at the front to a friendly lady who helped me sign up. I logged in with my Baruch computer username and password and gave her a bit more information and that was all there was to it! After I signed up, I met with one of the tutors to help edit an essay I have due. I was astonished and grateful as to how helpful the session was. Although I had proofread the entire essay aloud, two nights before I got to my session, and made changes, there were many more improvements to my writing that were made. Also, it was amazing to have another person read my work because I myself cannot find grammatical mishaps, but someone else can easily recognize when a sentence sounds weird. After spending over an hour at the center, I made all the necessary revisions to improve the essay and help get the amazing grade I am shooting for. I am happy that I learned about the writing center because it will be a great tool for me to use throughout my entire time at Baruch College. Also, because of the easy in making an appointment, I know that I can make appointments on a short notice and participate in as many of these workshops as I want. One lesson I actually learned while I was in my session was that usually, I begin many sentences with, “when ___,___ is ___ing ___”. This a sentence structure results in a passive verb which is not good writing. On the other hand, I was taught to drop the “when” and begin the sentence with the subject and the verb ending in an “s”. This sentence structure results in an active verb which is a higher level of writing. I can not wait to visit the writing center again in the future!

FRO Blog Post #1, Student Life

I joined the Maker Hub organization at Baruch. The Maker Hub organization at Baruch is a place where students can meet together to learn about and use new technology. They offer interesting workshops such as “Light Up Your Stuff with LEDs” and have a large array of things to do. I though it is a very interesting thing to join because you can learn a lot of cool things with 3D printing and the people who run the show are really helpful. I was glad to meet William who explained everything to me. It was also really interesting because other members of the organization have skills that can be taught to me and help me in the future. For example, one of the head people knows how to code Swift 3. In the future, being a part of the organization means that I can learn a lot from people who have a skill set that I would like to learn about. Another impression I have on the organization is that there is a lot of potential. Currently it is a small organization which is really cool because no one knows exactly what the organization can grow into if a large audience joins. I plan on being active and involved in the organization by attending the workshops they have, by helping other students who are interested in this organization, and by growing the organization. Furthermore, I plan on being active by bringing new ideas of what to do for the future and helping those plans become a reality. Another cool and interesting part of the organization is that they have a bunch of resources that are hard and expensive to come by. The 3D printer for example can be used to create items that I imagine and make them become a true reality. I am really excited and happy to be apart of such an amazing program that Baruch offers with such a helpful and nice leadership!
