Music Playlist

If you’re like me , or like most people now a days, you listen to music basically everyday and every chance you can. From time to time you will come across a song and think “Wow this song was written for/about me!”. The lyrics say what you been trying to say for so long. You can connect to it, relate and it’s pretty cool that you’re not the only person feeling that way.

1. Home by Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros

This is the number one song on my list. Since I joined the military I know what it’s like to sometimes be away from home for a long period of time. After a while I realized that because I been to so many places , met so many people I no longer had just one home. Home was no longer an apartment with 3 bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen and bathroom. Home started to become people rather than a place. Wherever my love ones may go that is where I’ll consider home from the day I enlisted in the Army. The warm embrace of my family along with the encouragement from my soldiers and the fun times with my friends make me who I am. Their support has driven me a long way. “Home is whenever I’m with you.”

2. Just Another Girl by The Killers

So this songs speaks about a guy who fell in love with a girl and his friends keep telling him to let go, “she’s just another girl.” Probably wondering how this could relate to me. Basically one of the things who made me who I am is an experience I had with a guy who was my best friend for so long. He fell in love with me and I didn’t feel the same. He went through a tough time trying to get over me. The chorus of the song says “Its a great big world she’ just another girl.” Made me realize that there are so many people in this world to be chasing after someone who doesn’t want you in that sense. I believe life experiences make a person. Oh, yes he’s still my best friend and slowly moving on.

3. You Found Me by The Fray

If not all , most, of us go through a point in our life where we feel lost. We don’t know who nor where to turn to. Things aren’t making sense and the one person who has known us best is no longer in our life. You feel like they don’t care anymore. No one does. Like I said life experiences make a person, even the bad ones. Warning, I’m about to get a little personal. At a point in my life I was ready to give up. I felt like I had no reason to keep walking this world. I felt like I had no one to turn to. I wanted to kill myself. I’d call it faith but when I was ready to do the deed the person came out of no where and stopped me. I didn’t know him. It got me thinking that if a stranger cared enough to save my life, I’m sure the people I love most would be devastated to hear I committed suicide. We spoke for hours. From that day on I do have my down days. However, they don’t affect me as much. I learned how to be independent and strong on my own. It’s nice to have people who help you get back up. It’s nicer when you can pick yourself up. I never did see that person again. So whoever he was I would call him an angel sent from God. Thank you kind stranger.

4.Iris by Goo Goo Dolls

This song came out in 2009 , the year when I fell in love for the first time. Yes I was young but come on? Part of who I am is a hopeless romantic. Ever since I was young I have been in love with the idea of BEING in love. Finding someone who will love me for the person I am. It’s one of my traits that I possess in which I love and hate. Although, I really don’t think I could ever get rid of it. I find something to love in every person that comes across my path in life.

5. You’re Beautiful by James Blunt

This song will forever be my favorite. I may not show it but I am an insecure person. It’s not as bad as it use to be because I learned how to have confidence in myself when I went to do my training with the Army. Yes beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. Too bad I don’t care if in some ones eyes they don’t see beauty within me. I know that even  with my many flaws some one out there will think I’m the most perfect person ever. I know I am beautiful in my own way. Confidence makes me who I am.

6. Be Alone by Childish Gambino

I hate the solitude. I do not like to be alone. Not so happy about the fact that I don’t really enjoy my alone time but oh well. I like being around people so I can keep distracted from my own mind. I would kill myself with my own thoughts. Overthinking is something I do so much.

7. Stronger by Kanye West

The name of the song says it all.  I have been through a lot of stuff for someone whose only 19-years old. I sometimes forget I am so young and have a lot I haven’t gone through yet. More than physically I am mentally stronger now than I have ever been. Sometimes things happen and it may bring me down a bit. I don’t let it destroy me though.

8. Me, Myself and I by Beyoncé

Yes I have love ones but at the end of the day I truly feel like I’m on my own. As mentioned earlier , I am slowly getting used to that. Just because they don’t have enough time for me doesn’t mean they don’t love me. I’m old enough now to understand that. I can take care of myself, watch my own back and keep myself motivated to keep on going in life. At the end of the day I can be my own best friend or my own worst enemy.

9. Lose Control by Missy Elliott

“Music make you lose control.” Yes yes yes. I love to dance. I was in a Salsa performance team for almost a year. In 8th grade I was in a theater dance class. Since I was so small and flexible they used me for most of the cool moves. Music definitely makes me who I am. I use to be so shy , still am but I love how dancing is anything and everything.

10. Good Life by Kanye West

I am who I am because of the life I chose to live. My mom has raised me a certain way. To always do what’s right so I can avoid any kind of trouble. People can give me advice all day. It’s my choice what I want to make of it. I love my life. Every day I am learning more about myself. This song really brings a good vibe to me and even though its saying the good life is all this money, materials and girls I still believe that life is what you make of it.

A FRACTION OF A WHOLE VERSATILITY

http://www.spotify.com/us/

This playlist is just a fragment of my personality… it entails a moodiness where i can be for early reggae; soft reggae, rocksteady, 80’s, jazz, early dancehall, rap, pop, instrumentals to name a few….in this piece of audio, it portrays the side of me that can be cool, calm and collective with songs, rather just rhythms  and instrumentals such as “darker shade of black” (Jackie Mittoo) ; another side that is ready to prove my capability and boldness to anyone and everyone which the song “made you look”, a lyrically true rap epic by (Nas). My loyalty to family, friends and anyone i care about and vice versa who plays a major role in my life is expressed in (Damian Marley ‘s) ” there for you” and if i just simply feel to meditate on myself and the world, i can take it back to early reggae and play “life” by the great (Bob Andy). There’s a big part of me that loves humor, i look forward to laughing everyday, this is a big factor that gives me a reason for life and just get out there, see, hear, feel, know something new  and this morning, i found that song, (General Levy),”Mr.push it good”, this was early dancehall where it was full of real life jokes in a few words on a 2 minute beat…I may be born in the 90’s but who says i cant have fun and dilly dally party like im an 80’s  baby…music from the 80’s are classic and despite the almost 40 years, they sound fresh like a record made yesterday, a song like “a night to remember” by (Shalamar), i could play 3 or 4 times consecutively….Whilst there’s  another side  where i can be soft and emotional , and (Sade) is one of those artist that brings that out of me, her song “is it a crime” resonates with how i express myself sometimes. And then i can be that loving gal , “latch” by (Disclosure & Sam Smith) along with that techno beat shows how girly and sweet and loving i can be when that’s dragged out of me! Yes, Yes, i do have my preferences, tell them (Diana King) how “shy guy” matches what my persona is attracted to.  Save the best for last, I love Me very much, a lot, i mean why not?? the song “cool operator”, a rocksteady tune exposes the narcissistic aspect of me in how i can hear those lyrics and apply it to MYSELF, all about me, HEY HEY HEY, IM ALL ABOUT MEEEEEE!!!….lol, ok let me stop…thats all for now, so enjoy my list, you’ll learn as i stated above a fraction of my whole versatility…

2. Waiting On The World To Change – John Mayer
3. Life Your Life – T.I. Ft. Rihanna
4. Forever Young – Jay-Z
5. Unwritten – Natasha Bedingfield
6. Billionaire – Travie McCoy
7. Not Afraid – Eminem
8. Magic – B.o.B Ft. Rivers Cuomo
9. I Gotta Feeling – The Black Eyed Peas
10. Remember The Name – Fort Minor

The song imagine tells of a world where there’s no conflict which is how I would like to see the world. Nowadays, there are so many problems within the world and I find myself thinking how much better the world would be without all of these problems. This leads to the next song which goes on to say that I can’t change anything. There’s a lot of corruption in this world and just being an ordinary girl isn’t going to make a difference, but if I did have the power, I would make changes for the better. Until then, I’ll be waiting for change. Live your life is a song that talks about ignoring the haters. If I were to focus on every little thing that somebody doesn’t like or approve of, I’d basically be living a life for somebody else. I choose to live my life without worrying about what others think. Forever young is something I would like to be, but sadly we cannot stay young forever. Life is short and we should live in the moment. I listen to this song and it reminds me that while I’m young, I should live my life because I’ll never know what my future holds, or could hold unless I experience it. The next song, unwritten, connects with the thought of living my life. My book is unwritten being so young and I have every intent of living my life to the fullest and writing my own future. Sometimes it’s better to “release your inhibitions.” Nobody else is going to live for me and my book is about me, so it’s time to start writing the unwritten. The next song, billionaire, is actually a goal that I’ve had for a while. A lot of people are striving for this and I want to be one of those who are able to say that they made it to the top. Even if it may not be billions, I would like to make enough to share it with those I love. Not afraid is a truly inspirational song to me. “I’m not afraid to take a stand, everybody come take my hand.” This song makes me realize that I need to face my fears, but it doesn’t have to be alone. Everybody has a fear and we can conquer them together. I’m raising my bar and setting expectations high because I’m shooting for the moon, but gazing at the stars because it’ll catch me if I don’t make it to the moon. When I’m feeling down, I listen to magic and because of the upbeat tune, I feel like somewhere inside of me there is magic. I gotta feeling describes how I feel at the end of the day. I’m focused on making myself happy and that’s what matters. At the end of day I would like to be remembered in a positive way. Being acknowledged is a great feeling to me and it’s one of the rewards of hard work.

Music is and has been a form of expression for centuries; music is a powerful source and it is also scientifically proven to stimulate brain activity. Without further adieu, here are 10 songs that define me.
1) Going to Hell – The Pretty Reckless
2) Kill Me – The Pretty Reckless
3) Viva La Vida – Coldplay
4) I Don’t Like – Kanye West
5) Absolute – Thousand Foot Krutch
6) Wish you were here – Avril Lavigne
7) All Around me – Flyleaf
8) OneRepublic – Secrets
9) Ghost In a Machine – B.O.B
10) New Soul – Yael Naim

For me, the type of music I choose to listen to usually defines where I am in my life as well as my general mood for that time. The top 10 songs all play a significant role in my conscious and subconscious thinking. For clarity sake, I will explain every song significance separately.

1) Going to Hell by The Pretty Reckless is a song about a young teen girl that’s going to hell because of her sins, mostly due to sexual promiscuity. To me, this puts into question the quality of people in Heaven and Hell, and gives me closure when my death comes because i’m not too worried about about whether I go to Hell or Heaven.

2) Kill Me by The Pretty Reckless is a song about a girl who fell into a bad crowd and woke up everyday wanting to die. I remember when used to I wake up every morning wanting to die so this song is important to me. Also, it was the song for my high school alarm.

3) Viva La Vida by Coldplay is a about someone who used to have it all but lost everything and that’s how I felt in school, I tried to cater to everyone, though I had many admirers and was overall liked, as time went on and people matured (as did I), smoke and mirrors all became meaningless and I was ultimately left with nothing.

4) I Don’t Like By Kanye West (with verses by plenty of irrelevant rappers) sits very closely to my heart because I don’t have time for fake people.

5) Absolute by Thousand Foot Krutch is a song about people with nothing to lose and fighting to find the truth. This ties closely to my political beliefs, as i’m sure the government is always hiding stuff and i’d like to know the truth.

6) Wish You were Here by Avril Lavigne – is a song I listened to over and over again when I made a big mistake in choosing my friends during high school and it messed me up extremely hard.

7) All Around Me by Flyleaf is a beautifully crafted song, when i listen to it, I can feel the lyrics ,the passion, be in the exact position of the singer and that kind of talent is something I appreciate a lot.

8) Secrets by OneRepublic is a song that I like a lot because I feel like it’s secrets and uncomfortable confessions that keep relationships alive and life interesting. Also, it means a lot to me when someone will share something personal with me.

9) Ghost in a Machine by B.O.B is a soundtrack used in my favorite episode of Gossip Girl where the guy loses the love of his life and runs away, unable to define who he is. I’ve also had trouble defining who I was at one point in my life so this song is significant.

10) New Soul by Yael Naim is a song about a new soul discovering an unknown place. This song is very upbeat so it taught me that not knowing who you are and being in an unknown place is not always a bad thing, but it can be a very happy and exciting experience.

Blog Post 1 – Bryan C.

ForestHey everyone, my name is Bryan Campana. This is a picture of a forest, obviously. I’m from the country, always will be, and it’s a big part of my life. I find that I’m most at peace when I’m outdoors whether I’m going hiking or walking in the park. I think our world is beautiful if we’d just take a second to look. Simple things like the sun rising in the morning are overlooked. Earth is beautiful! Enjoy it while you’re here!

4590948Moving to New York was a huge change for me but I’m making the best of it. I love commuting in the trains, but I absolutely loathe when it’s crowded. I have to admit though, it’s kind of hilarious watching people try to squeeze in. And it sucks when you’re the next person and there’s no more room. This always makes me laugh 😀

Okay, so this picture … I don’t think I’m shy, I’m just an introvert. I think this pretty much sums up my entire personality, haha.  I apologize if I ever come off as rude, I just don’t like to beat around the bush with social pleasantries. Let’s be friends!

I love to draw, paint, etc. It relaxes me and it allows me to express myself more freely. I also like to write poems (I kind of suck though). I love art museums, my favorite type has to be pop art. One of my favorite artists is Roy Lichtenstein. I like to draw in black and white because I think it gives the mind more space to think creatively – or at least, my mind.

Yes, I am actually gay, and I don’t see the need to shout it from the rooftops. However, I do believe it’s important to be honest with yourself. Taking a line from a favorite play here, “to thine ownself be true” – Shakespeare

I love music. there are no words to express how much I love music.  I think everyone pretty much understands how amazing music really is. I listen to all music, but my favorite genres are something along the lines of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Indie, Alternative, and also EDM. I think music is powerful. The song that’s stuck in my head right now is Say it ain’t so by Weezer. One of my all time favorite bands are The Black Keys.

I’m pretty good at computers. I love taking apart old computers, that’s how I learned actually, I’m self-taught. In Atlanta, I used to fix my friends’ computers and then we’d play video games together and through that I learned the software. One of my goals is to learn programming because why not? It’s on my bucket list. Also, it’s a pretty cool and useful skill to have.

I love adrenaline activities like bungee jumping or skydiving (Sadly, still on my bucket list) I went on vacation to Ecuador recently, where I was able to jump off a bridge.

I think we should enjoy it while we’re young, to keep life from becoming one long exaggerated sigh.

Thinking Out Loud- Ed Sheeran
Leave Me Alone- Michael Jackson
Isn’t She Lovely- Yami Bolo
Bow Wow (That’s My Name)- Lil Bow Wow
No Sleep ‘Til Brooklyn- Beastie Boys
Beautiful- Eminem
-Children’s Story by Slick Rick is a song that my dad used to rap to me as a baby, and also as I got older. I never really understood what the song was about until I got older and I could listen to the lyrics, but regardless, whenever I hear the song, I hear it in my dad’s voice.
-Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Theme Song is a song that my mother used to sing/rap to me as a very small baby before she passed away. Even though I don’t remember her, I feel nostalgic every time I hear it.
-Juicy by Notorius B.I.G. is a song that was not considered appropriate for a little girl back in the late ’90s, but I grew up listening to that song, and it actually became the song for my senior class in high school. Despite the vulgarity, that song remains in my heart and I know all the lyrics.
-Brooklyn (We Go Hard) by Jay-Z is a song I grew up listening to. Being from Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, born and raised, I have a lot of pride about where I am from and what I have accomplished thus far in my life despite the negative connotations about where I am from.
-Thinking Out Loud by Ed Sheeran means a lot to me, even though it is not an old song. I feel that it represents my relationship with my boyfriend who I plan to marry and start a family with in the future.
-Leave Me Alone by Michael Jackson was my “theme song” from the age of 14 to about 16. I felt alone and I felt as if I had no one on my side anymore. I became a recluse and I had a small circle of friends. That song clearly expresses the feelings I was having, but wasn’t able to express them.
-Isn’t She Lovely by Yami Bolo, a recreation of the song by Stevie Wonder, means a lot to me. My mother danced with me in her arms to that song at my Christening as a baby. It is one of the few things I have in my life to remind me of her, even though I don’t actually remember; I can feel it.
-Bow Wow (That’s My Name) by Lil Bow Wow was a song that I had on repeat as a young girl. I was in love with Lil Bow Wow, I even thought I would marry him (lol)
-No Sleep ‘Til Brooklyn by The Beastie Boys is another song that I identify with being from Brooklyn. My little brother and I used to play that song on repeat on Guitar Hero because we felt so much pride about where we were from.
-Beautiful by Eminem was a song I identified with all through high school, and I still identify with it. I’ve been told multiple times in my life that I’d be “more beautiful if…”. I felt as if being myself (a tomboyish girl) made me seem not beautiful to people because I was always criticized about the things I liked to wear and the things I liked to do. I loved to play basketball with the boys and wear Jordans; which I still do. I was often called gay, even though I know I am not. This song helped me deal with the criticisms and basically ignore the negative comments by having the “f*ck you” mentality. I realized that life was not about impressing anyone, but about being happy in my own skin despite what other people may think of me.

Explain How What You’ve Created Speaks To Who You Are

College is something that I always knew would be a part of my life and now that it’s here, it’s made me realize how important and vital it is. Even though it is my first semester, I see how much independence and responsibility being in college requires. The songs I have chosen best represents who I am for its underlying and straight forward meanings. No. 1 is a song that best describes who we all are, just ordinary people in this world who do not have everything figured out and are still finding themselves each day. This explains me because there are so many things I have to learn to grow into a better person. No. 2 is a song that has always spoken to me. I prefer to be alone most of the time and I am beyond shy. This is something I know I will have to work on because this has been my biggest problem for as long as I can remember. No. 3 describes who I have been and would like to continue being. I enjoy helping others in any way that I can. I would gladly put them before myself and support them in order to accomplish their goals. Nos. 4-8 are all songs that reveal the ultimate truth to who I am. All I have ever wanted to be in life is successful. I have had my doubts and numerous on-going moments about what will happen in my future.  I have my own dreams and things that I would like to accomplish, which of all I have to work hard to achieve. My mind is not completely made up about exactly what I want and I am sure my desires will change, however, whatever they may change to I will continue to be passionate and determined. I would like to have a life that is stable and healthy and therefore I would not allow anything to become an obstacle that I cannot overcome that would hinder what I am working towards. When all my hard work is done and if I am able to achieve my goals then I would like to think of myself as coming a long way and seeing myself in a place that I always imagined. No. 9 is one of my favorite songs by one of my favorite artists with each word having a deeper meaning. This song is about being strong no matter what, and not allowing words or the actions of others to distract you. I look forward to my future and I would like to grow much stronger as a person. Last but not least, no. 10 is a song that explains all of those who I have cheering for me and supporting me such as my parents and sisters. Since I am considered the “baby” in my family, they all realize how independent I am and they remind me every day of all that I am capable of, therefore I want to make them proud.
