Blog Post #3: Academic

On Monday, Skai and myself attended the Sidney Mishkin Gallery located near the Baruch Campus. Not only was I unaware of this gallery, but also unaware of the fact that it was 10 minutes away and more importantly FREE. On entering, the building seemed rather official and I felt as though I was entering a court room which made me even more excited to see the artwork. After checking our Baruch ID’s we were granted access and I was partially surprised at the size of the gallery. My classmates had mentioned that the gallery was small; but I would consider it tiny. However just because it’s tiny, doesn’t mean it’s bad. The artwork was captivating and thought-provoking. My favorite piece, as you can see in the picture, included the skeleton pieces: as it was clear, intriguing and odd. I also liked the colors and visual techniques used in the other paintings because it provided a good variety. There was one picture, that caught my attention, of what seemed like a prosthetic leg with a red to black ombre background. I especially liked the ombre background as I felt it emphasized the “prosthetic leg”, making it the main focus of the artwork. The colors used also created dimensions and brought my attention back to it a couple of times. The gallery, also included 2 other pieces that I particularly liked because of its colors. They included a variety of neon colors all of which created a euphoric feel. As I described to Skai, “It felt as though I was on LSD.”Snapchat-1892889429547031345

Blog Post #2: Career

Where do I begin. On Thursday Jonna, A.J, Moctar, and I (along with others), attended a workshop for Resume building hosted by Baruch’s Honor Society “Sigma Alpha Delta.” Prior to attending this workshop, I researched information on the workshop and found little to no information about it besides the location and time. Assuming this was a workshop where anyone was welcome to attend, I quickly spread the word to some fellow FRO classmates about this wonderful opportunity. Once I got there I completely changed my mind. For starters when I entered along with Jonna, I immediately felt that we were unwelcomed. How you may ask? Without saying an utter word, I could tell by the facial expressions of two of the moderators that we were unwanted. This in itself made me want to leave right away. But it was further reinforced when one of the moderators proceeded to say and I quote “I see a lot of new faces I have never seen before and I don’t understand why.” The manner in which he spoke immediately made me think he was a student being a jerk. But I soon discovered he was actually one of the moderators. Putting that aside we were able to speak with Ricki Weitzen, the woman in charge of actually giving the presentation and she allowed us to stay; seeing that we were not going to cause any harm in simply being there. The workshop overall was extremely helpful; it provided me with useful tips on how to make my resume appear as professional and polished as possible. I am overall glad I stuck around to attend this workshop and I am more than assured that the moderators and Ricki were glad we did too (as we were the only ones participating).

With high expectations, I quickly entered and awaited the beginning of the Battle of Lexington at Baruch’s gym. While waiting for the game to begin, the energy from the Bearcat fans opposite of me was felt everywhere. The continuous cheers and energetic chants from the fans, rapidly made me feel enthusiastic about the game beginning and, hopeful for a victory. And just as quickly the game began; Baruch’s women’s basketball team got ahold of the ball and swiftly went in for a shot. Unfortunately, Baruch’s team missed and struggled for majority of the game. I really did try to maintain a positive attitude and cheer our team on; but I felt as though Baruch had too many weak spots and wasn’t working well as a team. The opposing team, Brooklyn, on the other hand, seemed to be strongly working together, analyzing every pass and every shot taken. Although Brooklyn took home the victory, Baruch’s efforts were strong and I remain hopeful that they will continue their hard work and take back a victory.
