Today I attended a workshop by STARR career development center concerning internships.  Actually, I was the only freshman attending it. I learned many aspects about internships I did not know before. There were discussed two types of internships: unpaid and paid ones. In fact, companies nowadays hire students who went through paid internships 3 times more frequently than ones who went unpaid. To add to that, today job vacancies are becoming more and more competitive. We were told that it is possible to arrange a job interview on campus. In most cases companies who interview students on campus have more than 300 applicants; they choose 12 to interview and one to hire. Numbers are a little bit scary. Additionally, companies have begun to look for freshmen to hire.

I also learned about websites where I can search for jobs and internships besides STARR webpage. Besides local job and internship suggestions, we were told about options to get experience abroad.

Unfortunately, it is more difficult for international students as me to get a job or internship in US than for other students. However,  it is possible to succeed with OPT or CPT trainings.

All in all, I learned a lot of new information on workship and it encouraged me to attend more seminars about career building.

Blog Post #2 – Student Life

Candy Land was my first event to attend in Baruch College. I really liked atmosphere there: energetic music, silver balloons, candy-shaped decorations. Actually, it was a very pleasant event, as I am a big fan of cotton candy and sweets in general! Fortunately, I arrived there relatively early, so I didn’t have to stand in that long queues. There were many stands with candy, popcorn, smoothies and cotton candies. Of course, as a candy-obsessed person I ate everything I could. Moreover, there were various activities to be involved in, for example, bouncing castle, climbing inflatable rock or caricature paintings. Also, one could get a sign with whatever he wanted on it. I wanted to get one for my friend, as she had a birthday that day, but the line had already reached the other side of the gym, so I headed right to the exit. In the end I took a picture with candy decorations and left with a bundle entirely filled with candies and full of positive emotions.

On Thursday, February 18, I attended Study Abroad Fair hosted at Baruch, in Newman Vertical Campus Gym. Representatives from different universities across the Europe, Asia and Latin America were offering their academic programs. At first I went to see information about Zurich University of Applied Science in Switzerland. I met a guy who went there for one semester and he was fascinated about it. He really liked the city and enjoyed staying there. He also said that studying there is not easy, no one makes you feel obliged to study and professors are not really inclined to help students during the semester. Then I moved to another table, where there were University of Amsterdam representatives. They have really good programs to offer for students interested in Humanities, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Economics and Business, Law, Science, Medicine and Dentistry. Apart from exchange programs there were language learning programs, as one offered in small town Salamanca, located in Spain. Two Baruch students who participated in that program told me about their experience. They lived in Spanish family, where no one spoke English. One of the girls did not know Spanish when she arrived there, so in one month living in this family she began to understand everything and even speaking.

All in all, every program was very interesting in its own unique way. I am considering participating in exchange programs, maybe for one full year, so Study Abroad Fair was very exciting and informative to attend.
