Blog post #3 Career

One would have to lack all human compassion to not be moved by the amazing pieces students read at the Baruch Voices event. Students wrote heartfelt monologue ranging from topics such as Pokemon to love to depression. It is amazing to see the bravery of these students; sharing in front of a class of familiar faces, in front of strangers it’s terrifying. It was so lovely to hear Vanessa’s monologue again because it was just as powerful and emotion evoking as it once the first time. I was saddened to see that not more of our fellow freshman attended the event. I think it would have been nice to hear monologues written by our advisors as well. The emotion in the room was almost touchable. It would have been nice to be able to meet the authors to have a deepened understanding of the people writing. It’s great to know I attend a college in which people are comfortable enough to share their emotions with strangers.

Blog Post #2: Academic

Baruch offers such a wide array of wonderful activities available meant to push an academic’s (such as myself) mind. When offered this wide range of choices, I decided that a visit to the on campus, Sydney Mishkin Gallery. Oh wow what a treat. Despite the room being small, I found all the art in it to provoke extreme contemplation; needed to truly assess the artists’ works. The piece I have pictured myself with has got to be my favorite in the place. The splitting up of the skeleton seemed to be very symbolic to me, though I must admit, too complex for my mind to figure out the meaning behind. The gallery also offered a place of tranquility, as, if only for a moment, I was able to escape the chaos of the city and immerse myself into the beauty of art. Also, being able to visit with other people (and for free) made it even better. To have such a resource on campus is honestly amazing. However, unless they add some new art I see no reason for me to return; though I hope I can still find the motivation to do so. Thanks Baruch for making such a wonderful place for learning and the realm of academia free.

Blog #1: Student Life

The ball soared out of her hand, gliding towards the basket; it seemed destined to sink through the net and produce the satisfying “swish” that all fan fans of the game love to hear. Instead, all we heard was the clunk of the ball hitting the back of the rim as the Baruch girls’s basketball team missed their first shot of the game. It did not get much better from then on as the Bearcats continued to struggle, and never really looked involved in the game. The atmosphere was quite negative on my side of the bleachers, as it felt like most of the fans were rooting for Brooklyn College because they were at least making baskets. On the other side of the court were the true fans; the ones that came in a variety of outfits and sang chants to try an d rally our school on. Overall, the game was less than exciting as both teams seemed to be having rather tough nights. It was obvious, despite Baruch’s minor runs, that Brooklyn College was bound to win the Battle of Lex. We ended up losing 63-47, in a game that did nothing but bring down my previously low school spirit. I will probably not go to another Baruch basketball game as the whole attitude of the home crowd was very un-energetic, and made it quite boring. Only if there was a game which promised an exciting atmosphere would I go again. GO STUDENT LIFE!!!!
