Carnival

Oh no ! Did we just walk into a 10 year olds birthday party ? No, it’s the Candy Land carnival. Great ! Are we are suppose to jump on the bouncing housing again and eat candy’s? It’s like elementary school is all over again. That was my first expression and I actually thought that it would be a boring event but it turned to be a very exciting one. I went to the event with a few friends from my home country and we really had a good time.

Unfortunately, there were long lines for candy’s so we didn’t get one. However, we were able to get the cotton candy. The music was lively and there were a lot of fun activities going around. There were bouncing houses  where students were jumping and from their expressions we could get that they really were having a good time. Rock climbing was another popular activity of the event. There was another ride in  which you had to jump from one bouncing ball to another and you could barely stand on the bouncing ball. To my knowledge there was not a single person who could complete that without falling.

The undergraduate student government were giving free stuff on liking their facebook page. In the event I met a really a nice person from the beta alpha psi who told me about this honorary society and I plan on joining beta alpha psi in future. There was also a photo booth at the event which captured photos in a candy land theme. The place was really crowded so didn’t really got the chance to go there.

Apart from some crowded places which stopped me from having more fun, it was a great event and it was fun to be a part of it. Although I did say that it looked like a kids event but to get through the semester, I guess we need more events like the candy land carnival.

2/11- Dear White People

I attended the screening/discussion of the movie Dear White People during club hours on Thursday. I hadn’t seen or heard of the movie before then. I met up with sean who’s also in our FRO class before the movie. We sat next to each other. There were maybe about a dozen people that also came, which I found to be a little surprising, I thought more people would be interested in attending. The movie itself was pretty interesting and I did enjoy it. I did think some of the acting was a little weird and maybe seemed too dramatic. The overall plot made sense. The movie had to do with racial tensions between different groups of people on an ivy league campus. The climax of the movie is a “black face” Halloween party that a fraternity at the school throws that ends with a brawl between students. Dr. Arthur Lewin from the Black and Latino Studies Department led a conversation after the movie was over. I think he did a really nice job of giving everyone a chance to speak, he kept the discussion moving very quickly. The movie featured an on screen kiss between two male characters which, as it turns out, a couple of people during the discussion expressed theyIMG_2051didn’t appreciate. Someone stated they they felt the scene was a part of “Hollywood over representing gay people” in response to Dr. Lewin’s question which was whether any of us feel Hollywood is pushing a gay agenda. I happen to disagree with that person, and I did express that during the discussion. Dr. Lewin brought up some interesting things to think about including the question of whether or not black people can technically be racist. The discussion did make everyone think at least a little bit about their own views. I had a good experience and I would attend a similar event during club hours again.

Carnival

The story I am telling here is a story of belief. Because belief or rather disbelief is what I felt and what made the experience of the carnival much more intense and actually important to a searching soul I call myself. (No of course I dont have a thing for overly dramatic entrances, stop thinkng that)

My general expectations of school spirit were pretty low or better nonexistent.(Surely, not because Germans are forever marked  to not be proud of being a union in any way). I was very skeptical and didnt believe a single person would enjoy themselves in promoted school events. But I was wrong.

i certainly cant speak for my block-mates since   faces can always just be good masks but I was honestly and very positively surprised by the effort that was put into the whole thing and how some people got excited about parts that I might have categorized as Kidz-enjoyment. A down-side to that I must admit was that even though those funattractions were meant to be for Kids, mature Baruch-college students were restricted from entering any of them when not having passed the official adulthood age of 18, no matter how badly they wanted to jsut quicklyn try them out.

Other than that- and that was really my only complaint, it was a well organized event. They had cool things like getting yourself drawn for free as well as many delicious things for free. i mean just like that, I could have  walked up to that stand and get a first second and third smoothy FOR FREE!!!! ( Im sorry if Im getting waay too excited but in an expensieve city like New York you really have to budget well and these things help enormously).

Also the social factor like meeting other people you just briefly know from your classes or hanging out with your already somewhat closer friends made it a lot of fun!

I truly believe it had a good impact on me and hope I will get the chance again to attend it next year as well.

You know you lost me!
