The threats associated with the development of The Barclays Center had mostly to do with the local residents. Many residents near Atlantic Avenue had issues with the center being built, mainly because tenants had to find a new place to live in order to make space available for the Barclays. This obviously created hardship for those who refused to leave. Many residents ended up getting paid to abandon their homes.
Since the arena was built, prices in the neighborhood have gone up tremendously. Atlantic Avenue -Barclays Center has become a well known area of Brooklyn, thanks to numerous artists visiting and sporting events taking place at the arena. There can be loads of traffic upon that busy intersection. Many locals complain that ever since the arena has been built traffic in that part of downtown Brooklyn has increased immensely.
The issue of gentrification is most certainly in effect as well. More and more tourists and people not native to the area, in particular people in their mid 20’s-30’s, tend to be pooling in, allowing Atlantic Ave and the surrounding neighborhood of Park Slope to become even more so diverse.
